I gave it as a gift. If I remember correctly, it was made of a very thin wood. In my opinion, it's very attractive, but not so sturdy. I was pleased with it as room decor but I don't recommend it as child's play. My preteen grandson uses it to store his Harry Potter costumes and it works well for that purpose.

Yes, you can fill it with whatever you like! It's not as large as the trunks in the movie, but it is large enough to fit all the hardback books plus the DVDs.
