Vitruvian man, so named after the ancient Roman architect who in a written work on architecture stated that all temples should be built in proportion to the human form of man because he thought that the human body of man was a model of perfection on the basis that the outstretched arms and legs of the human form fit into perfect geometric forms - the circle and the square. Vitruvius was influenced by Pythagorean philosophy and the belief that humans can fit into both circle and square. The basis for this resides in the belief that the circle represents eternity with no beginning and no end and symbolises the cycle of everlasting reincarnation whilst the square symbolised life on earth with the four corners representing the four seasons, the four directions - East, South, West and North. Leonardo da Vinci, influenced by this philosophy became the first artist to successfully draw the perfect human form and found the circle and the square in the figure. Leonardo da Vinci held that "Man is the model of the World". Vitruvian man is one of the most famous drawings in the world. Made from cold cast bronze; a process made by combining small bronze particles with resin into moulds that develops a rich quality in appearance over time. It is also worthy to note that the outstretched arms head and legs also form a perfect pentacle - five pointed star which is itself a very ancient symbol. This item is part of a package which includes a brass love spoon -a traditional token of love and a symbol of affection between lovers.
