When he started becoming more interested in different types of ramen, we started gathering those as well - and as part of that we picked a couple spicy options. This was one. I went ahead and cooked them up, and couldn't help but wonder if maybe I was making a bad decision. It's late. I get heartburn if I eat past a certain time. Spicy foods make it worse. (Aging is a pain in the rear.) I could think of a million reasons to not try to eat these at 8PM but surely they can't be too bad, right? The noodles are a little thicker than I'm used to and I was pleasantly surprised by that. The "flake" topping is a furikake so afterwards I added some more of my own favorite furikake seasoning because it sounded like a good idea. I tried a bite, then my son took a bite. For a few initial sweet milliseconds, it was okay. It was good. It had flavor. That's all I remember about actual taste, because after that it was nothing but pain. This coming from someone who likes spicy foods, but has never done any kind of spice challenges. My son was out after one bite and grabbed milk for us both. I got four or five bites in and decided I had to stop. There was no benefit to continuing. I would make a different ramen and be done with the agonizing burn on my mouth and lips. I think my fight or flight mechanism kicked in around then and I realized that I could run from the noodles.. Or I could battle them. And I wanted more. I sat back down.
