Go for it!
I love this series! The manga has great humor, the Ainu culture is very interesting, and the plot is intriguing. It is one of my favorite Manga series so far.

Solid Second Volume
Having teamed up in the first book, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi Sugimoto and Ainu girl hunter Asirpa continue their search for a hidden cache of stolen gold in the wilderness of of Hokkaido in 1907. Among the things they must contend with in this second installment of the story are a unit of rogue soldiers led by a sadistic commander, bears, and other parties interested in finding the gold.As in the first book, the tone ranges all over the place, from scenes of extreme graphic violence (like a man's face getting ripped off by a bear), to culinary interludes that are basically recipes for regional dishes (some mouthwatering, some less so, such as the half-page closeup of a boiled river-otter head...), to juvenile poop jokes. There's even a super-cute bear cub who makes funny faces! In any event, the story takes the characters to an Ainu village, where the author's extensive research into culture and customs shows in both artwork and script. All in all, the central storyline of the hunt for the gold doesn't advance much in this volume. Mainly, it serves to introduce new villains and provide additional backstory on the two main characters. It's good stuff, peppered with action scenes and neat details (like the "Russian-style" skis with seal fur bottoms) but hopefully the plot can come a little faster in the next one.

Prison Break meets early 20th century Japan, plus Ainu culture and bears, bears, bears
I can't help but think of the Fox tv show PRISON BREAK when I read this manga, but I like this manga more than I ever liked that show. Still, if you love epic narrative puzzles, you'll love this book. If you love learning about Japan and -- amazingly so here -- Ainu culture, you'll love this book -- which does a lot in each volume. Vol. 2 isn't as balanced as Vol. 1 -- Noda needs to lay down some background material, setting, and characters for us that he left out in Vol. 1. So the pacing is a bit off from Vol. 1, but this series of chapters has a lot to offer. Some scenes are so brutal, they had me laughing out loud. I get the feeling that Noda is finding his voice, realizing how he needs to spin out things and tell us about how cool Ainu culture is.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE PHYSICAL PRODUCT (the series gets a five million stars from me)
it came with a prominent crease in the corner of the cover. it may be a little hard to see in the picture but it’s a lot more noticeable in person. 🤕

More comedy and action!
Volume two of Golden Kamuy is even better than the first volume in my opinion. This is very common with manga since often volume one is just there to set everything up and introduce the reader to the premise, setting and main characters. This volume had me laughing and on the edge of my seat/bed during the more tense and action-focused moments. Volume two definitely has more comedy than the first volume but is also filled with action like the first. The historical facts are still littered throughout the entirety of this volume, and cooking takes a major role in a lot of it too.If you aren't a fan of gore this volume also has a decent amount of it, but it's not too bad compared to other gory series. This volume introduces a lot of new characters (and I mean a lot!) but most of them seem interesting. Others serve their purpose by being fodder, which might be a gripe for some. The characters are all also quite quirky, and I find myself deliberating whether I should like them or not based on some of their questionable actions. As I mentioned I was laughing a lot during this volume and I do think it's even more impressive than the first. However, I will give one more warning and that's that this volume has some questionable moments during its "comedy" one scene in particular that comes to mind is when a prostitute is thrown across a rumour (it's later revealed she was severely injured by this incident), all because a guy thinks she ratted him out. It's supposed to be a funny moment and I'm sure it will be for some, but it's a continued sign for me that Japan is super backwards in a lot of ways (including its government and views) and has a long way to go in terms of how it treats real women AND female characters. If you can look past this more severe instance of sexism, the rest of the volume is gold/golden.
