A lovely story!
I had the pleasure of meeting Sonette Tippens, the author, at a book fair at the Lake Geneva, WI library this past summer. I spoke with her about the book, then went home and bought it. At first, I was surprised by the unconstructed, journal-like style in which it was written. After getting into her story, I really appreciated the way in which Sonette decided to write her story. The style was refreshing and the story was very endearing. I loved how Sonette embraced the Mexican culture, the people and the food! I also loved how considerate she is of others. I am hoping that Sonette will continue with the story in a sequel, because I want to know more of the history of her early years in San Miguel de Allende. I also hope to run into the author when I'm next visiting Lake Geneva, so we can continue our wonderful conversation.

I am considering this my first of two reviews. This "beginning of the book" review has me intrigued, delighted, and looking forward to enjoying more of Sonette's adventures as I slowly turn the pages. Slowly? Yes. Because I'm hanging onto every rich, descriptive word and savoring the sights in my mind's eye. I love the way Sonette describes her impressions of people and events - with respect, curiosity, and an honest sense of what does or doesn't work for her ... and she considers everything, accordingly. As a reader, I am being brought willingly into this world I have never actually seen and yet feel so much a part of. As for my second review? Well, The Great House of Raul Rodriguez has become my lazy summer reading project ... so I'll be shining up those FIVE STARS - end of summer.

Amazing Adventure
I was drawn into the book instantaneously due to the intrigue of the unknown with the components being murder mystery and a grandiose1600's mansion as components to unravel the mystery. Without revealing the marvelous unfolding of the narrative the depth of the "experience" reading was an adventure unequaled in my past even though I have had the pleasure of visiting and hearing of friends homes in Mexico and their and my pleasures/adventures living there, Thank you Sonette for writing! An interesting view of a visiting American who knew the family many years ago and is considered part of the family. She gives a view into the daily life of the family and friends in San Miguel Allenda, Mexico.

another place and time
What a great story of another place and time... not so far away, perhaps, but mysterious and elusive in this intriguing story that touches the edges of magical realism and issues of appearance and reality. Definitely a good and rewarding read."

This book is so dull I could not finish reading it
This book is so dull I could not finish reading it. I have read many books about San Miguel de Allende and enjoyed most of them. In my opinion, the author used too much trivial detail.
