Black clay Chamba cookware is well-known throughout Colombia and is used in restaurants and homes for preparing and serving traditional dishes Its origins can be traced back at least 700 years to vases and pitchers found in pre-Columbian archaeological sites. It is still made in the traditional manner, by families in the village of La Chamba, on the banks of the Magdalena River in Central Colombia. Each piece is hand-crafted using local clays, burnished by hand and fired on-site. The painstaking process and natural materials give the dishes an authentic, distinctive and elegant look. Chamba cookware heats evenly and is renowned for retaining heat.

Gloriously beautiful, easy to use, delicious results
I love this pot! Not only is it extremely beautiful to look at and satisfying to hold, food is delicious when cooked in this pot. I’ve been using ours regularly since ordering it in February of this year. Seasoning is simple and only required before first use. First few dishes have a smokey flavor due to the firing process used on the pot. Plan on making something for the first 2-3 uses that will be complimented by this unique bonus.Clean up is easy with mild scrubbing for anything stuck on. I plan on ordering the next size down because this one actually holds quite a substantial volume and is more than I need for an every-day meal for our family of four. Anything above the liquid level tends to be slightly more difficult to clean off, as it is with other pots, so a pot that is more full means easier clean up (although it has never been difficult to clean).I love the look of the blackened clay and found that contact with direct heat (gas stove top burner flame) removes the natural blackening from the clay firing, so I typically avoid using it on the stovetop and prefer putting it into the oven. When on the stovetop, handles remain cool enough to touch/use. Handles cool quickly while food inside remains super hot, so handling is easier than stainless or cast iron (as long as you give a little time for handles to cool after removing from oven). I love this feature.Until owning this pot I used All Clad uncoated stainless and heirloom cast iron, exclusively. Stainless is easy but there is a sharp edge/flavor to foods cooked in it. Cast iron isn’t good for acidic foods and requires a little extra TLC but is worth it for its crisping and even heating qualities and for charring. The simple care for Chamba ware is easier than caring for cast iron, although you must take care not to break the clay, of course, and be cautious about heating/cooling it so as not to crack it. I always set it on a wooden or cork trivet to protect it from sudden temperature changes and only put it in a cool oven (nrverpre-heated). I do not store foods in the fridge in it. Acidic foods mellow in this pot. It’s ideal for tomato based dishes, stews, braising and the like. I don’t eat starches but I imagine it would do just as well for beans and other starchy foods.Every time someone new sees it I get compliments on its beauty. It goes from stove/oven to table with aplomb because of its rustic elegance and unusual shape. I will be ordering a couple to give as gifts this holiday season. I ordered another pot from a different seller (for a gift) when this seller was out of stock. I ended up returning the other pot because the other seller’s lid fit so poorly that it wouldn’t seal. This seller’s pot seals well. You need to rotate the lids to find just the right seating point but it’s simple to do. Again, love pretty much everything about this pot.

I love this pot
I love this pot. Beans come out delicious and the cook time is very short. It took an hour to cook pinto beans to perfection.

More Than Expected
This pot is more beautiful and functional than I thought it would be. It was easy to season and easy to use. Cleaning it after using it for serving the meal from it was so easy...simply swiping the inside clean under some running water while using a non-abrasive cleaning pad. The flavor of the beans that we have cooked in our La Chamba pot go beyond that of any conventional soup pot we have used. Initially, we had an issue with the lid seating well. We contacted the company and were overwhelmed at the great customer service we received and how quickly our issue was corrected. Our experience with this vendor was awesome. That fact, along with the great results from cooking with the clay pot, contributed to this purchase being more than we expected.
