Yes there is a waterfall sound and yes there is a pump. The waterfall sound is very nice. I have a floor fountain at home and this wall fountain at work. Happy with both. You'll want to use distilled water. If left on 24/7 this wall fountain may use up to a half a gallon of water per day (surface flow evaporation). As far as quality I am very happy with this wall fountain.
