Would be more accurate to call it "semi-self priming"
The pump will prime itself, if the fluid is within a few inches (less than 6) of the pump. That is, 6 horizontal inches, not vertical. I use this to pump water out of 5 gallon bottles. Once the pump primes, or I prime it, it works well. It will move 5 gallons in 30 - 45 seconds. Be cautious with extended use though, as the motor will over heat even with water running through the pump.

12v transfer pump
Does what it says it will do, but does it with a noisy whine and I don't think it pumps water a fast as proclaimed.. However, i did not have to prime it.

Great little pump
Installed this pump into a solar powered system to move water out of a pasture pond. It runs 12+ hours a day, 7 days a week, and keeps on running.

Powerful Pump
Moves a lot of water, fast. Uses standard garden hoses, which makes it easy to use. It also came with an attachment to pick up water, as well as an extra impeller and gasket. Only two downsides are that it doesn't have a power switch on the unit, and it's loud, but since I'm using it as a backup bilge pump on the boat, loud is OK with me.

Get another brand
Product leaks as soon as I connected to the hose they give you an extra seal to replace it in the kit because they know is bad, once new seal is in there you can clearly see that seal is bigger and the fan touch and break the seal, pump works as it should but leaks everywhere. Not happy at all.Broken seal was the one that came with the pump, used it once.

Great pump works really well and very portable
Super awesome temp pump runs very good. By passed my broken pump in my trailer when there was no electric avail. Worked great sucking water out of a drum beside my trailer

How stupid is that
One of the reasons I purchased this product was specifically because the description reads "Self Priming".I get the product. Pull out the manual. Front page reads "Self Priming Pump".Operation: Step 1: Prime the pump. Warning:You must manually prime the pump. Failing to do so will ruin the impeller.How stupid is that?
