Viking: Dress Clothing Garment

I wanted this to be so much more than it is.
As has been noted before, the translation mistakes and the typos seriously undermine using this book in any practical manner. It is obvious that Ms Glaesel knows her stuff and is an excellent tailor. The pictures are wonderful both as examples of each piece described and as a reference on how to wear them. The patterns, when they're there, are fine and easy to refer to. I was confused slightly initially as the pieces overlay each other, but that is quickly overcome when studying. Also, Ms Glaesel usually includes a cut image on the descriptions to see how to save fabric. Some of the drawings and descriptions make it very difficult to see how to stitch pieces together. For example, I still can't figure out how to stitch underarm gussets in her manner. However, I was able to figure it out and do it my way.The thing that is near unforgivable and seriously degrades the book, however, is apparent omission of many patterns. Someone said earlier that the patterns are in a Kindle book. Perhaps they are, but half of them are actually in this book. However, many aren't. The patterns are listed at the end of the book and it is obvious that many were omitted or forgotten. For example, to make the men's shirt, it is Pattern H and is excellent. The pants are marked as Pattern L, but in the book it goes from Pattern K To Pattern S. UGH.I have made a couple of pieces from this book, but it is in spite of the hindrances mentioned above (I couldn't even begin to try the pants, not without a decent pattern). This book needs a serious going over with an editor who speaks the English Language, at a bare minimum. That way the typos, misspellings and awkward English can be fixed. The instructions should also be gone over to make them more clear, as well as potentially re-doing some of the drawings to make their intent more obvious.I gave it three stars because the quality of the information and the variety of pieces is so good. But it could be so much better if the problems were cleared up. I wish I could help with that... If there is a new edition and the problems fixed, I would buy this book again in a heartbeat, even at this price.

Price is worth it!
Lofotr Viking Museum recommended this, yes it is one of their own but she knows her stuff! Itโs now up to you to be familiar with sewing techniques and ability to interrupt drawings, if you canโt then learn cause youโll be doing yourself a favor! Beautiful book, well illustrated and covering as much as youโll ever need! This refers to living everyday wear not fantasy warriors! Enjoy!!!

A bit repetitive
While this book had a lot of good, even excellent, information, it is a very difficult read at times. There are many typos, and entire sections are cut/paste repeated from one to another. It's almost as though the publisher and author were trying to fill in space. The book would be a much better purchase at $35 than $50. The page count is deceptive, because of all of the repeated sections. The book reads like an informational pamphlet provided with a project for the fair (or A&S documentation for those familiar with the SCA). A good editor would help with this significantly, in addition to cutting the cost of the book by removing unnecessarily redundantly repetitive sections. All complaining aside, the information that IS in the book is quite good. The author is clear that this is HER take on the archaeological finds, and that this is just one way that you can recreate a Viking style garment. I give it 4 stars on the actual content, but only 3 starts overall because of the price:value ratio.

Worth the money
I attempted to borrow this through Inter-Library-Loan from my library, but there are few copies out there and the libraries that have them are charging for borrowing, so I just went and purchased it. The book is well thought out, the chapters start cover the basics of fabric to the extreme details of clothing details. Women's, Men's and Children's garments each get their own chapter(s) with great pictures. But the number one reason I love this book is (And for those who are looking for them...) Pattern. A whole section of them at the back of the books, with various sized for ease of creating or copying out your own. This is the book that I was looking for to get that true historical look for garb for my SCA events. Huzzah.

Decent starting point
Considering the dearth of other "Viking" costuming sources this book provides a decent starting point for "Viking" costumers. This book provides patterns with minimal reference to the source of those patterns. As mentioned in the introduction, this would be a good companion book to "Viking Clothing" by Thor Ewing (which provides good background on "Viking" garments but no patterns). The patterns provided here seem to be plausibly period. This book does a good job of offering helpful sewing hints for adding gores and gussets. As a broad overview of various "Viking" relevant topics it does a decent job.

It seems to be an excellent book for SCA and other costume history replication
It seems to be an excellent book for SCA and other costume history replication. There are many nice color pictures, a page of basic patterns for men and women with several sizes. A beginning sewist or costumer might need help drafting a pattern. You need to be familiar with using meter and centimeter for measuring, but that is much easier than inches. There is some information about making trim, stitching seams, decorating seams, and a variety of clothing styles. A small section on inkle loom card weaving some trim patterns. I am eager to begin using the patterns.

Good Info But Too High Priced For What You Get
It did have a lot of information but as others have stated the information is repeated where it could have been lumped together into each section. The female and male children's outfits are just a repeat of the adult version. These sections could have easily been added together with a note for any changes that needed to be done for children. Price is too high for what you get so look for a good used book instead of buying new. Other sections on braiding and tablet weaving were less than useful if you are planning on doing that type of work and you would be better off buying a book specific to those methods.

Not for beginners, and marred by constant errors.
While the patterns are in sure wonderful and the author certainly knows her stuff, it is wickedly hard to follow. I'd warn anyone who is not a seasoned costume maker to see this book as an advanced one, because without prior dress making knowledge it is going to be very difficult for you. The constant errors in the English version marr what otherwise would be a wonderful book, I have had to abandon a couple of the patterns as I just can't figure them out.

Just what I needed :D
Brilliant book for re enactors and larpera wanting a more historical feel.Don't expect detailed pattern cutting instructions, some drafting experience is helpful and look for the charming spelling/grammar quirks as it had been translated. The warrior book has some cross over with male patterns.I love it !!

Great if you know what you're doing
Great patterns and illustrative pictures. Some minor mistakes in the English translation. Had to ask an experienced dressmaker to help me understand the patterns, which helped. Not for noobs. Created a lot of interest in the reenactment group and is a very good book to have in your collection
