Your own portable air pollution sensor According to the World Health Organisation, air pollution represents the single largest environmental health risk worldwide and is responsible for more than 7 million premature deaths per year. Air pollution is often completely invisible. The CleanSpace tag allows continuous observation of air pollution both indoors and outdoors, so that you can see the air you breathe now for the first time and use small changes to avoid unnecessary exposure. CleanSpace helps you not only in preventing hotspots of pollution but also in designing clean routes, and it rewards you if you decide to clean transportation methods. ADVANTAGES • You monitor your total carbon monoxide (CO) exposure - hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or annually. • Show the air pollution on a map of the environment and discover new possibilities to limit your exposure. • Find out what CO exposure you are subject to indoors. Learn, for example, how you can improve the air quality in different rooms of your home or at work. • Find out what CO exposure you are subject to outdoors and how the level of exposure changes from place to place and depending on time. Avoid hotspots of pollution, and plan clean routes to keep your exposure to a minimum. • Completely portable - it weighs about as much as a bar of chocolate, and data are also recorded precisely even if the module is in a bag or pocket. • Look at the provided instructions and tips for reducing the air pollution you are exposed to indoors and outdoors to a minimum. Freevolt - the world's first technology that can recharge itself. The CleanSpace tag may not be large, but it is intelligent. It weighs only 51 g, is about as big as a smartphone and never needs charging - the first electronic device in the world that it is equipped with the revolutionary Freevolt technology. Freevolt is a patented, ground-breaking technology that harvests the wasted energy in wireless networks such as mobile phones and Wi-Fi networks for a continuous power supply. Synchronization of the CleanSpace tag with the CleanSpace app to display what kind of air you're breathing Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas. It is odourless and colourless, so you can neither see, smell nor taste it. It is however a part of the exhaust of diesel cars, for example, so that you often inhale it without even noticing. The CleanSpace tag allows you to see what are you are breathing so that you can make small changes in your lifestyle and your transportation methods to avoid the worst. Revolutionary technology The CleanSpace tag is the world's first product equipped with the revolutionary Freevolt technology. In combination with the CleanSpace app, it helps you visualise air pollution trends, plan clean routes and avoid hotspots of pollution. The app uses software for machine learning which automatically rewards you for clean transportation methods (for example walking, running or cycling). The combination of the tag and the app turns CleanSpace into a unique and high-performance tool that helps reduce air pollution, motivates you to choose active transportation methods and improves health. Reward for clean transportation methods The CleanSpace app and the tag give you access to your personal air pollution data so that you can plan clean routes and avoid hotspots of air pollution. At the same time you are rewarded when you choose clean transportation methods. Take part in a global initiative If you use the tag together with the CleanSpace app, you can become an important part of the world's first crowdsourcing network of air pollution sensors supplied with recycled power. About the start-up Describe your product in three words. Personal air-pollution sensor How did you come upon the idea for this product? Lord Drayson, who was formerly Minister for Science and Innovation and is an experienced entrepreneur technology, was very aware of the increasing medical evidence of the harmful effects of air pollution, and he was concerned about the lack of feasible solutions. A meeting with Dr Manuel Pinuela, an electronics engineer who was about to receive his PhD at Imperial College in London, led to the development of Freevolt technology and the invention of CleanSpace - the world's first crowdsourcing network of air pollution sensors, which are powered with recycled electricity from wasted wireless signals in Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Here at Drayson Technologies, we are committed to changing things. CleanSpace is a fast-growing community of people who work together to improve the air that we breathe. What makes your product so special? The CleanSpace tag is a real revolution. First, the tag is the first electronic entertainment device that never needs to be charged. It is equipped with Freevolt technology and harvests wasted high-frequency energy from Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Secondly, it is the commercially available device that, together with the CleanSpace app, allows users to take effective measures to respond to a central public health problem without relying on government or charitable organisations. The CleanSpace tag includes a Freevolt antenna and state of the art carbon monoxide and temperature sensors, a processor, storage and a Bluetooth link, all contained in a small, lightweight case. It is the world's first personal air pollution sensor that continuously monitors air pollution wherever you are. What have you liked most about your start-up? Setting up a top-class technology company that addresses a serious health problem and really makes a difference. The development of a world first: A product that is equipped with a revolutionary technology and whose effect is even more revolutionary - it brings together people that work together to improve the air that we all breathe. At Drayson Technologies, not everything revolves only around technology. It's also about how the technology can be used to make a better future.

it's great to use for bus journeys and highlights the levels ...
I use this to monitor air quality on my commute to work at Heathrow airport, and also moving around the airport. It's frustrating that it only measures CO and not NOX or particulates, and also that it's only 5 minute bursts rather than continuous monitoring. That said, it's great to use for bus journeys and highlights the levels of pollution you're exposed to. Take snapshots of the worst journey results and tweet them to the mayor!

A waste of money
The device would not connect to my phone-I followed all of the troubleshooting tips without success. Like many other reviewers I don't consider that this device is at all reliable. Don't waste your money.

A waste of money.
I bought a CleanSpace tag when they were £75.00 and eventually sent it back when it stopped working altogether. What annoyed me is that the server side software insisted that I was travelling on a bicycle or the Tube when I was actually driving down the M6 in the Midlands. It also suggested that I was on the Tube when I was driving my electric car on the Isle of Man. It took ages to get a refund and I found that the Customer Service people where totally reliant on stock answers to queries e.g. "Our team are working on this....", "The AI software will improve over time...that is how it is designed...". I must agree with another reviewer that this device is more about testing the FreeVolt technology than monitoring clean air. It is a CO detector and that is all. There is no way you can tell if the readings are correct and in my experience it gave some very strange readings. It also could not follow my journeys accurately even on a clear-sky day, using my Samsung S6. This lead me to believe that it was not talking to the phone for much of the time.

Great device for monitoring air quality. Chance to be involved in a project involving Kings College, London.
I have been using it for one week so far. It is part of a project involving Kings College, LondonThe good.Works well and gives an indication of air quality. As a walker and cyclist, the good news is that the air quality where I live is very clean which is great to know. Good also when travelling. The support from Cleanspace is very good so if you do have problems, I suggest you contact them.No need to replace any batteries in the TagThe less goodIt can take a while to connect to your phone but it does after a few attemptsThe app is not comprehensive so you need to webpage on a PC in tandemm

Awesome bit of technology - be patient with it
I was fortunate to have received my tag back when the project was first kicked off. I'm still trying to work out how the thing is able to charge itself from residual wifi signals - it does have a hefty battery inside so perhaps it only uses a trickle of energy to periodically update and pair with your device? Regardless - its an amazing piece of technology to never have to charge it!Be patient with the app and follow the steps - its not going to work lightning fast - the tag takes a few hours to calibrate and readings do not come in instantly. But this is to be expected. I would love to be able to connect multiple tags so that I can monitor my air at home as well as on my commute. Would also be cool to hook it up to Home Assistant.I am happy to support the project with my data and it gives me useful readings of pollution in my area. Works well with my Android device and the hardware is kept up to date with firmware updates (see photos).

Nice idea, would be a fantastic project if it worked.
This feels like more of a test bed for the freevolt technology than an actual attempt to monitor air quality. And sadly it seems that saddling the product with this burden has killed it. Simply put it seems that the freevolt cannot provide enough juice to run the tag. I had to give up on the geospacial aspect of the product because it seemed like the extra bluetooth chatter caused the tag to become completely non responsive for 24-30 hours at a time leaving big gaping holes in the data collected. Even working passively this still seems to happen if you request readings to your phone more than 3-4 times a day. Given the lack of user interaction with the device directly this can be incredibly frustrating because the tag just plays dead and cant even light the reset LED for multiple hours at a time.I'm considering breaking it open to see if I could hook it up to a solar panel and battery instead. If they had gone that route from the start they could have had a very cool product with a far more convenient form factor. unfortunately we have something that occasionally works in-between frequent bouts of imitating the functionality of a rock.

Clever technology that works well, but far too expensive.
As a long time user of the CleanSpace app, I got one of these for free from CleanSpace.Firstly the fact that it works without ever needing charging is fantastic, and I look forward to the FreeVolt technology appearing on all sorts of other devices. As a pollution detector it works well, giving me a continually updated graph of pollution wherever the tag is located. The biggest problem with it is the price - at £75 it is way too expensive for what it actually offers, to really gain traction the price needs to be significantly reduced. Everybody I've shown it too have thought it is an interesting device, love the FreeVolt technology, are shocked at the price.
