The pictures in this book consist of 140 of the best taken by the world-renowned wildlife photographer Frans Lanting over the course of 20 years. The photographs are just awesome and beyond description in their capturing the beauty of their subjects. More than five stars for the photo collection. These are pictures that any photographer, animal lover or admirer of art would absolutely love.The photo collection is split into 3 broad categories, pictures of single animals (that chapter is entitled “eye to eye”, hence the title of the book), a second chapter of animals in either mated groups or parental relations and a third of large number of animals together. In addition and unlike so many coffee table books, the back of the book consists of an appendix that has a small thumbnail picture of each picture in the book along with a few sentences on each picture. Details include where taken, a detail or two on the animal along with a few comments, in many cases, on the regarding how the author took. The latter does not include a discussion of photographic equipment used but instead the techniques he may have used to get the shot (i.e., he may have approached the animal on his stomach, took the picture from a hunter’s nest in trees, etc.). An excellent supplement to the main photographs contained in the book. If only more books had such an appendix.In terms of text, other than the appendix mentioned above, there are only a few pages. They discuss what inspired him to become a photographer (he had a masters in economics but gave up this field after going to the field), some discussion on techniques he uses to get his shot (no technical photo details other than to say he used film for photographs in book but has since changed to digital) such as how he approached the animal and his belief that one needs to build a psychological rapport with one’s subjects to get truly great shots.Last but not least the format of the book needs a few words. This is a large, heavy coffee table book that is very well made. The pages are plastic covered and look awesome (i.e., no cheap paper) and the book’s binding does not consist of glue but instead of thick string. Hence this book should have a long shelf life. Five stars on the format and construction of the physical book itself.In short, an excellent book that would make the perfect gift for photographers, animal lovers and those who appreciate photography or fine art. Five stars for every aspect of this wonderful coffee table book.

This book was beautiful from front to cover. Even the paper that the jacket was made out of awed me. The photos depict our world the way it is supposed to be seen; candid, young, innocent and pure. Treat yourself to this one, it will open your soul.

Wow !!! How can anyone get so close?!These photographs are stunning. The talent of Frans Lanting oozes from these pages.There is a closeness to the subjects here that borders on the intimate. In some cases, one wonders how he actually managed to get the shot.The focussing and exposure is spot on and the composition is perfect.I have tried to follow this type of photography and I am only too aware of how difficult it is to obtain these sorts of images.I take my hat off to Frans Lanting. This is a brilliant work. A completely unique approach to wildlife photography. His behind the scenes narrative to the shots is illuminating.This book is a valuable reference for all nature photographers. Sensational !

This is one of the most beautifully published books I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. If you love animals, photography, or just high quality book publishing, this one will bring a great deal of satisfaction. Lanting's images transcend mere animal identification shots as he clearly develops a relationship with each of his subjects. When you look at a portrait of a chimpanzee, you see pride and when you look at a photo of a family of Emperor penguins, you feel all the symbolic meaning of parenting on a spiritual level. Full of amazing photographs, this magnificent book makes a great gift (my mom loved hers) and comes highly recommended!

Frans Lanting does it again in Eye To Eye--a brilliant collection of intimate portraits and daily activities of various animals. Like Jungles, it's a book that no natural photographer should be without. When you can see the individual hairs in a courgar's fur coat, it makes you kind of wonder what it would be like to be that close to one.Looking at Lanting's work is always like looking through a book of artwork, as if he is the Picasso of photography and we are looking through his masterpieces.

EYE TO EYE is right! Frans Lanting has his best book to date with these tight / intimate shots of a variety of animals. Great photography and moving images will make you feel like you're really close to these subjects. As a photographer myself, I look to a Lanting as one of the very few photographers I can learn from and an example of a photographer with his own vision. Lanting gives me all that and the great pleasure of viewing the pictures he's made, not just snapshots of the same boring viewpoints done by so many other published photographers. If you want closeness to animals without the risk, buy this book!
