### ⭐⭐

Clever ideas but poor poor story telling

This book at times reads like a very young adult novel, I am sure the style is deliberate by the author but it is very naive and rather childish. The science and technology is amazing and the author obviously has some fantastic ideas and that is what kept me reading but universe spanning scenes and mind boggling ideas does not a good book make. There is no depth to the characters, no feeling, the dialogue is poor and apart from throwing in a few swear words every now and then to try and appear the 'stars' are actually feeling anything we just drift along waiting to get to the big finale. I'm sorry I cant be more positive but you have to build stories so a reader feels something for the characters not just keep throwing in more and more fantastic ideas. If you want to read really expansive totally mind-numbing cosmos spanning thoughts and story-lines then read some Iain M Banks.

    Universe, one; er . . . ; universe, won.

*by M***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 December 2017*

A rather over-ambitious tale broad in scope but shallow in depth. Somewhat inspired, I suspect, by the classic epic tales of Gilgamesh and Ovid, this tale fails to maintain a necessary rationale for the ceaseless progression of illogical events which regale the main character and his companions in their quest to overthrow an evil demi-god who is hell-bent on universal assimilation. The pace is admittedly fast and the story becomes, bizarrely, quite compulsive; but solely for the reason that almost every paragraph is a minor cliff-hanger which demands resolution before one can put the book down! About eight-hours reading in all, it kept me amused prior to sleeping during a week or so: but I really expect more than just 'amusement' from a novel, and given the grandiose theme of this one, some grandeur could have been more forthcoming!

    Loved it but...

Really enjoyed this book. However too many of the enemies machinations and supposed plans felt far too convenient for the sake of the plot, but that was easy to ignore. My biggest gripe is why everyone speaks like they're from a jane austin novel? This irritated me throughout the book, and it jarred horribly with some awkward, very current use of swearing. Maybe 900 years in the future everyone has mandatory elocution lessons forced on them ;) don't let that put you off though, as this was one of the better, more unique, and incredibly imaginative science fiction stories I have read in sometime :)
