Potassium iodide, or KI, is the salt of potassium and iodine, identical in structure and chemically similar to table salt. It is a common laboratory chemical, and is also commonly used as an iodine supplement and as an ingredient in some antiseptics. Potassium iodide is slightly reactive to oxygen, and when exposed to air it can gradually break down into potassium oxide and elemental iodine. The freed elemental iodine can cause staining and corrosion. It also can absorb water from the air, causing it to become damp over time when exposed to air.
