Haven't even used it yet

I'm giving this a 5 star review without even using it.The design is unique and looks like it will be effective.I have a favorable opinion of Gerber products as very good without being overly expensive. They are small without being small. The shape seems like it will be easy to handle well.I will update my review after use but I unless they are dull or don't function somehow I expect they will hold up.The price was more than a lot of options out there but not unreasonably so like some of the high-end fishing brands.

Pricey

As an avid fly fishing guy and river steelhead/salmon guy, I think this line cutter or nail knippers are a little pricey for what it does. There really isn’t that much added benefit I’ve significantly noticed. I think you can find something cheaper with still good quality. The build of this though is pretty durable and I think the fact they made these to change out the sharpened cutters is pretty cool.

Nice tool

Nice tool to use if you have a hard time tying your line. Personally, I see some use for it but it can be cumbersome at first. Overall, I probably wouldn't buy again because to me, it takes long to use this tool than just tying it yourself.

Can't wait to use!

I purchased this for an upcoming fishing trip. The product came as advertised and arrived in stated time. This is one of many Gerber products I own and count one for daily use. The line trimmer is extremely sharp. The size fits in my hands well, but I wish there was some texturing on for better grip on the top and bottom. Very happy with the line holder, since this is always an issue for me on the river. Can't wait to use on the river. Watch out big Virginia brown trout!

Cuts...barely

I’m looking for a more robust set of nippers for the fly vest. These aren’t the ones.Ergonomically no issues, similar to super high end ones. That’s where the positives end.The point came smashed. I suspect this is a packaging problem, allowing the nippers to over close during transit. Also, the spike can clear big hook eyes, but will struggle on smaller ones or something with a bead or cone. There’s not enough clearance to get to the spike. It won’t clear a size 18 perdigon. Poor design. The cutters themselves have chatter marks from the tooling and are misaligned. I could overlook the first issue, if they cut, but the alignment issue meant I couldn’t get a full cutting stroke, so I had to pull the last little bit out to separate my cuts. It struggled on 7x tippet.I didn’t bother to try it on anything stronger or more exotic.Pass on this one everyone. The value isn’t there at 30 dollars when you can get a spike/nipper for less than 10 from the bucket on the counter of the tackle shop. And the sub 10 dollar one works flawlessly and doesn’t hurt to lose.I’m giving it one star, because it does cut. Barely.

Excellent nipper

I am a nipper snob. I have had and lost them all. Abel 'stupidly expensive' and sucks to lose. Simms Guide: great value, Orvis Flow: great value, now the Gerber Freehander: best value for the $. More features and a strong pricepoint.

Great Concept Poor Execution

Wanted to like this and seems to be a great concept but is non functional from the factory.Cutters are chipped, dull and misaligned. Very poor QC, unable to cut 5X line. Returned for a replacement. We'll see if its a fluke!Nope!2 for 2 both nippers too dull to nip any mono line and the line vice plastic piece falls out and is down stream on first useBig disappointmentKeep trying Gerber

Okay for fly fishing but not good for conventional fishing.

I've used it for a few months now. I've used Orvis, Abel, and Hatch nippers along with traditional pliers with cutters like Van Staal and Hatch. Now I use Gerber nippers for my very small fly lines. It does well with thin tippets and fly leaders. However, they get outgunned on larger lines and braid. (for that I use the Abel or Hatch). Thick saltwater FC or braid lines just use the pliers. No nippers can hang with those thick lines. In general, I liked the ergonomics and design. It fell short on performance comes to thicker lines. However, it is the least expensive one in the group so the value is there. Just find the right situation for it. I got it because it was cool looking. But I carry the Hatch most of the time...
