The book is very well researched but easy to read
A valuable resource for anyone interested in the social history of England and/or genealogy and family history. This book is a fascinating insight into the development of local government from the medieval courts up to the 20th century. The work of the Parish was closely connected with the church and at some periods run by it, and the Parish officials did much of what is now done by Parish Councils. All sorts of records were kept in the Parish Chest in the church, some ecclesiastical, others very secular. Some churches still have their Chest, sometimes with ancient records in them. But most of these records are now held by local Record Offices. The book is very well researched but easy to read, with many details relating to specific places. It has a detailed Table of Contents to help you find the topic you want, . Altogether an excellent reference book, at least until 1983 when my copy was printed. There are possibly later editions also.

I recommend it to all my students
May have been written several decades ago but still the classic text on Parish Chest records. Obviously no mention of recent developments in digitisation and internet access but the records themselves haven't changed - only in some cases the means of access. Littered with interesting - and sometimes amusing - examples and written in a really engaging style. I recommend it to all my students.

It the book that shows, in my experience, the little used documents that can add a rich texture to your ancestors lives. Helping you to find and understand the "parish" documents that help to knock down those "brick walls".
