The fact that Surgeon's early works is a million times better than anything produced today tells you everything you need to know about the current state of techno.

Quality Affordable Techno
A package that amounts to a collection of great electronic music and excellent value for money. If you dig techno then you will be aware of Tony Surgeon, a marvellous DJ and producer whose music veers from club friendly fare to more abstract, sonic compositions. This release groups 3 albums from him that were all released on the superb Tresor label. In the world of techno, a release on Tresor is tantamount to a declaration of global recognition as well as an endorsement of sheer quality. The first album released was 'basictonalvocabulary' and is very club friendly with some great beats and rhythms, 9 of the 10 tracks could be incorporated in a techno mix. 'Balance' followed and is on a similar trip to its predecessor. 'Force and Form' is another splendid album, my favourite of the three, it seems to have more substance than the other two and is more versatile, giving enjoyment out of a club context. If you were to buy these three albums individually, you would most likely pay more than three times the price of this release. This should make it more enticing to the curious, if you've ever wondered or been tempted to buy a Surgeon album, now is the time to go for it. Great artist, great tunes, great price, what more do you want?

Great introduction to the work of Birmingham's best known techno artist, Anthony Child
Surgeon recorded three LPs back-to-back for Germany's Tresor label in the mid-1990s and this boxset contains all of them. There's a lot more to Anthony Child's productions than first appears. On first hearing, he perhaps sounds a lot like Jeff Mills Purposemaker Compilation releases that came out around about the same time. This is particularly the case on Surgeon's first Tresor LP "Basictonalvocabulary". Though Surgeon and Mills do have some common ground - particularly rhythmically (and it's certainly no coincidence both artists recorded for Tresor), close up Child's productions have a UK electronica sensibility reminiscent of the likes of Autechre, Black Dog and even Aphex Twin. By the time of 1998's "Balance" things start to chill out a bit more and by "Force + Form" we're almost into concept album territory. What strikes me about all three titles here is that they haven't dated at all and have maybe even improved with age.The boxset is packaged not unlike those major label "Classic Album Series" collections - an outer slipcase containing three LP-style covers with card inners. It's a bit lacking in information, considering this isn't exactly a budget package although it is still very well presented. (Tresor should consider giving some of their other artists e.g. Blake Baxter the same treatment, maybe?)Given that these records came out during a golden era of techno and electronic music they will have been missed by many (me included as until now I was only familiar with "Basictonalvocabulary"). "Tresor 97-99" then, presents the ideal way of giving them the attention they deserve almost two decades on.

Techno!
Recently bought this album. There are some quality techno tracks on this. It doesn't sound like the tracks were made in the nineties. Highly recommended if you like hard techno.
