Sorry, this is not exactly a review. I haven't yet seen series 8. But enjoyed series 1-7, hence five stars a priori. :)My reason to write this is a pathetically misleading "review" by someone else here. (See the one star review, there is only one.) As 16 people marked it as helpful, I feel pretty sure that this info is important to quite a number of people. So just to be clear:THE BOX SET DOES HAVE ENGLISH HOH SUBTITLES *AND* AUDIO DESCRIPTION FEATURE.Hence the info in the one-star review is simply NOT TRUE. Which is the opposite of helpful. Apparently some people can't be bothered to know what they are talking about.Anyone who needs subtitles may enjoy Vera Series 8. Good luck.

Outstanding series this time out.
This is one of the few series that can always be counted on for solid entertainment, but this outing is particularlygood, even by the high standards already set. Brenda Blethyn is outstanding in this group of stories. Frankly, in my opinion, the previous couple of series had slipped a bit, still good but not great. This four story set is well up to the high standards ofthe series and may in fact have raised the bar a bit.

Same high standard drama with brilliant Brenda
Brilliant as always, with complex plots and surprises, amid dreary and bleak surroundings at times. The music adds to the mysterious atmosphere without being intrusive. One reviewer described Vera herself as laughable, but her dowdy clothes, her trademark hat and her old fashioned methods are what makes her unique. She is a brilliant detective, knowing how to treat people with sympathy when needed, and an understanding of human nature essential to the success of her job. When I first watched an early episode I, too, thought that Brenda Blethyn was miscast. But how wrong I was. She is wonderful, and has plenty of support from her team. I hope that I shall be ordering series nine soon.

The best of the lot and they were all superb
If I could give series ten stars, then I would. What I find really amazing is the fact that we are now in series eight and the series just gets better and better. This series is not high octane excitement, but just first class British television. The casting director who chose Brenda Blethyn for the role of Vera ought to be knighted. The role was made for her and she really ought to get a hundred BAFTAS for her wonderful portrayal of Vera. The plots and twists keep me glued the box right till the end.On the negative side it looks like another year before we get series nine.Bottom line is that this is a superb series that represents the best of British tv. Highly highly recommended

I LOVE VERA!!
Brenda Blethyn is one of the great modern screen actresses. I have many of her movies and all of the Vera series. She is in a class of her own. I actually pity other actors who have to work with her. She is so good that the eye is drawn to her even if unintended. Jane Horrocks, that superb comedic actress, did hold her own in Little Voice, as did Marianne Baptiste in Secrets and Lies. In Vera, Brenda continues to entertain us with her Colombo style raincoat and her signature green hat. Brenda is my age and that she is able to be so brilliant an actress in her seventies is a testament to her genius. Absolutely amazing!! I also love the character she plays, an independent woman who likes her own company; an intelligent woman who can delve into a mystery and sweep away the cobwebs to reveal the bare walls of the truth. The country of Northumberland is also a character in itself. Don't miss this series!!

Just Vera!
Vera, we love the intrigue interspersed between tea breaks and transportation in your trusty RoverThe plots are interesting and the view of the rugged countryside is fantastic...it always causes me to wonder, why people would live so far out in thebarren stretches of the cold and often rainy countryside, perhaps this is a cause , indeed, for the murders , in the first place.I hope we can enjoy Vera and her side kicks in the police organization for many years to come."What say, Pet, can you continue your series for a few more years?"
