A welcome return to form - Inspirational Joy at its finest!
After a couple of self produced albums, Jonathan has wisely reunited with Luther "Mano" Hanes for this latest offering. As witnessed in Mr. Hanes' work with the late great Andrae Crouch, he is able to contribute a high level of technique and vibe to the arrangements, so much so that the songs sparkle and resonate with 'spirit'.As much of a fan as I am of Jonathan Butler, I felt his previous worship offering "Grace and Mercy" lacked a little inspiration. "FREE" hits all the right notes, both lyrically and musically. Relentlessly positive, Jonathan manages to be convincing even when proclaiming the simplest of messages...."Be Encouraged" is a good example. The title track is a compelling look at the Joseph story whereas "Never Find a Better Love" finds God speaking directly to our hearts.Of course there are a number of sing-able worship choruses included. "I AM that I AM" is the most obvious one for church worship teams to pick up on, and "He is God" would be a great gospel choir workout. "Where Would I Be" is one of the standout ballads - not a sophisticated lyric by any stretch of the imagination, but Jonathan Butler can sound authentic singing the phone book! From the opening track "Moving on" to the closer "Sing Africa" this is a welcome return to top form for one of contemporary music's most consistent artists.

One of Butlers best albums. Beautifully produced, written and arranged
Jonathan Butler has returned to submit an absolute killer album which not only contains fantastic arrangements, playing and vocals but creates a fantastic foundation of good message of love and hope in our life. This is a guy thats rubs shoulders with George Duke,Marcus Miller,Kirk Whalum the best of the best in the jazz rock field but yet Butler never forgets his roots in the Church and in doing so has presented close to one of his best releases thus far. A great album in particular tracks 1,3,4, 8 which are the highlights for me. If your new to Jonathan Butler, dont hesitate to purchase this album because hes simply world class and i am fortunate enough to have been inspired by this man since my teenage years in the mid 80s.

Slick Guitar Playing W/Anointed Vocals & Lyrics!
As usual, Jonathan Butler is the MAN! He delivered crisp, on-point vocals and supernatural guitar playing, with a touch of groovy funk. I love the jazzy blends along with the gospel, as he kept Christ the center of every song. The music and lyrics will touch the heart of anyone who listens. I only wish the CD had more songs; it's just that great! "God bless you and your music ministry, Jonathan! What a blessing you are to the Body of Christ and the world as a whole!"

4.5 Stars: One of Butler's most rewarding studio projects. HIGHLY recommended!
It's official: Jonathan Butler and Luther "Mano" Hanes (2004's 'Worship Project' and 2007's 'Brand New Day') are in the top tier as far as artist/producer partnerships go today! On 2015's 'Free', the two finally reunite once again and come up with a truly inspired album that easily stands alongside their two previous collaboration efforts. Songwriting and musicianship both shine brightly due to Hanes' signature attention to detail during the recording sessions. Shame Butler didn't work with him more often, his discography would've been far better off in the long run had he done so earlier on during his music career too:::sigh:::
