Can the combs of a mandolin penetrate the weave of the glove to some extent or is the mesh tightly woven? Thanks

The mesh is pretty tight. I think it would work well to protect your hands from the combs of a mandolin. When I try to poke the tip of a sharp knife straight through the weave only 1/8 inch pokes through. It could go through the glove and cut you but it wouldn't go very deep. And you would really have to work to get a knife or other sharp object at an angle that would cause it to go through the glove. Also the weave is a bit thicker, the links overlap slightly, when the glove is relaxed, giving you more protection.  When the glove stretches over your hand as you are using it, it opens up to a single link but this stops most sharps just fine. Hope this helps!

Do you have any idea if this glove would protect against a standard power drill?

Mesh metal gloves and rotating power tools do not mix. The term "power" in and of itself denotes an item much stronger than you are. If you are using any kind of drill bit and it catches the metal mesh glove it could at least grab the glove off your hand. It could also get intertwined in the glove and either pull the glove off your bloody hand or yank the drill out of your other hand making it into an uncontrollable missile or both. Using the mesh glove with a drill press, hand, or band saw will result in similar tragedies. In addition, metal mesh gloves conduct electricity and if the power tool shorts out, you could be severely burned or electrocuted.  Stick with well fitting leather work gloves and be ever vigil. The short answer is, "No metal mesh gloves with power tools at all." Raymond

I would like to protect a pair of xl 5mm neoprene gloves, do you think the xxl would fit over top?

I wear a 7 or 7 1/2 in a reg. glove, which is a normal medium. I decided on the size Small because I didn't want the fingers to be too long.  The small fit me perfectly so I think because your purchasing a glove to go over another glove, I think the XL would do just fine considering the Steel glove runs larger then a normal glove. Are these actually made like chainmail, and not woven wire like the cheap knock offs(and fairly expensive ones too)

As far as I can tell it is woven just like chainmail with tiny connected rings.  The woven pattern seems very strong and I have had the glove for months now and it is still like new.  I don't know how the glove would hold up to a strong strike with a big butcher knife, but I know that it will protect you while chopping or slicing with a standard knife in everyday cooking at home.
