The First Wizard (Dawn of Wizards)

Wow. What a unique and captivating tale! The action and suspense had me hooked. I loved the humility of the main character and his growth story. It has an altruistic tone to the entire story and a constant suspense as to when the first wizard will appear. It kept me reading like rare other stories. I fully recommend you give this one a shot!

In The First Wizard, the reader is introduced to brothers, Ian and Vic, who are living a simple life, and maybe having that hope for adventure, but that all changes when their village is attacked, and they are taken as slaves. The story starts out a bit slow, but in this case, it is fitting for this story. The reader needs to know about the races of magic, and the world that Ian and Vic live in. It is also a long read, but it is worth it. Imagine being taken as slaves just so someone can dominate you. There is great growth in the world, and the characters, through out the story, and the focus is on the world of magic, the world people live in, and how the First Wizard comes to be. I see that this is a first book in a series, so I do look forward to reading the sequel to this. If you love or even like Epic Fantasies, this is the book you want to read. The author has a grand imagination, and not just for the writing, but the world he takes the reader to. I am a fan of Jeffrey L. Kohanek and want to read whatever this author writes. A reader can get lost in the story, and for this story, that's a good thing. Sometimes you have to look around and see where you are before diving back into the story. The reader just embarks on a superb journey. If you don't believe in Wizards or magic, this book will make you think about that. The First Wizard is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. A Believable tale of intrigue, war and seemingly impossible achievements. A very good read with high action. The heroes begin as real people with various limitations that mold their capabilities overcoming their own limitations as well as their enemies. This book leaves one at a loss for its end leaves one missing the friends gained within its pages. I look forward to the next book!

The book is a bit cliche and there really aren't any surprises - you pretty much know what is going to happen all the way through the entire story. It almost feels like someone took an early beginner's D&D game night and turned it into a novel. But it was still a good story and kept me entertained. I think it is worth the time to read as long as you don't expect a timeless classic.

The story isn't bad, but I keep waiting for the magic to kick in and it doesn't. ** spoilers ** - Story lacks a moral compass. Burn a village to the ground and enslave a bunch of humans? People feel bad. The dwarven hero you put your hopes on is a drunk and hocked his magical weapon, so they steal it back. From a good guy, because the pawn shop owner never does anything bad. Stuff like that - The dwarves burn your village, kill your dad, enslave your mom and the love of your life, make you a slave; where's the rage? - You spot a dark elf in a nefarious plot against the dwarves who burned said village, enslaved family, killed dad, and you report it to the dwarves? This is a perfect spot for a moral dilemma, do I aid the dark elf as a means of revenge against the dwarves, or do I aid the dwarves against the elf who is clearly up to no good. Perfect spot for a crisis. Nope, he goes to bed. - The romantic relationship between the elven king and human slave girl is super problematical/abusive - What is a death speaker? I don't care about the prophecy, elves are evil in this world (slavery is evil in my book) and they can go fall for all I care. But death speaker? What is this dark magic? - where is the magic in general? The book should be about wizards - Symptomatic of the short comings is this. There is a trip on boat between two cities. Ian gets seasick, Vic is intimate with a girl, nothing else happens. No sea monsters, no pirates, no crew trying to waylay the party. It's like an old movie, you walk into a room and there is a gun on the desk. At some point you know someone will pick it up and use it. The gun is a promise. In the same way, a ship on the ocean is a promise of adventure. Too many lost opportunities.

It's been a long time since I've awarded a five star rating so many books these days just boost the word count with pointless descriptions and basic lowest common denominator reading levels. The story is strong, the lands seem realistic and characters are individually thought out. The book is a first of series yet stands on its own leading hints to future storylines and a much needed maturity as so many new books all seem to be geared at a fifth grade reading level.

What I liked was the fact that the hero had to advance through many trials and wasn't immediately over powered. That said, it really did have parts that were a bit boring. Kind of like real life. Lots of mundane with moments of terror or excitement. The story was good enough, that I'm looking forward to reading another installment. That in itself is praise from me. I'm a heavy reader and a wee bit jaded. So, my wishing to read more is praise. Read it yourself, make up your own mind.

I took a chance on this book after seeing a Facebook advert and I'm glad I did. Well written with no bad language, it was a joy to read.

An MC without a shred of agency on a railroaded story makes for a tale that is far less engaging than it could be. Yes, it's in the name of prophecy or fate, but still, it makes for a rather passive ride. Add to that the fact that it takes almost the whole book for the title-giving wizard to appear. It's not a bad book. It just didn't manage to grip me, and the protagonists remain a bit pale because of their lack of agency and decision-making.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next. The story is well told, exciting and full of great characters.

This was my first book by this author. I loved it a lot. Now I want to check out the other books in this world.

The book had you entertained throughout the story and kept you reading the book to the end to see what happens next in the series of books.
