A very good surprise - a teenage dating comedy, which is actually good, charming, full of wit and completely free of obscenities
I haven't been a teenager for a long time now and therefore romantic comedies about teenage dating are really, REALLY not my usual poison. But this one, inspired by "Taming of the shrew", I found EXCELLENT and I spend a really good moment watching it! Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.The story follows initially Shakespeare quite closely, even if the action takes place in American high school, in our times. By the orders of her father Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) can start dating only once her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) gets also a date. The only problem is that Kat, although a very attractive girl and definitely not uninterested in men, is such a shrew that no boy is ready to go anywhere near her. Then one day Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a new student, fells in love with Bianca. Following the advice of his friend Michael (David Krumholtz) he hires local "bad boy" Patrick (Heath Ledger) to seduce Kat - and therefore open him the way to ask Bianca out. From that moment the story diverges quite a lot from Shakespeare's original, as it can be expected - and I will not say anything more about it.The greatest asset of this film is a strong scenario, full of good dialogs and tasty jokes but lacking any kind of obscenities. Let's stress it again, the two key words of this scenario are "GOOD TASTE". This film is many levels above typical teenage dating comedies, which are usually full of gross, embarassing and frequently obscene moments. The cast is excellent. Julia Stiles is SPLENDID, both in beauty and talent, every inch as good as later in "Dexter" when she played Lumen. It is really a pity that she didn't have a better career in Hollywood... Young Heath Ledger is AMAZING and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Charlie Krumholtz are very good. Gabrielle Union adds her glorious beauty to the show in a smaller role and special mention goes to Susan May Pratt who plays Julia's only friend, a girl completely obsessed with Shakespeare. Three other characters add a lot to this film: Bianca and Kat's father (Larry Miller), Ms Perky (Allison Janney), school guidance counsellor with a quite unique side business and last but definitely not least Mr Morgan (Daryl Mitchell), a very competent, very black and totally amazing English literature teacher. The chemistry between two main characters is very credible, the ending is not only touching but plausible and the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic - it is a real pleasure to listen to it.Bottom line, this is a very good romantic comedy, clever, well made, without embarassing, obscene or gross moments and at the end we are left feeling really good. Bloopers mixed to the credits are also a recommended viewing. ENJOY!

All's well that ends well
Rarely have I seen a 'high school' film that is so enjoyable. I have watched it 3 times and it is so funny. The plot (as such) is based on Shakespeare's Taming of the shrew. The shrew, in this case, is Katarina Stratford who is a student with real attitude and then some. She snarls, she is opinionated about everything and not slow to express it. Her more docile younger sister Bianca is all the boys' favourite at school but cannot date until Kat is dating (rule of their house imposed by Dad). So a guy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) with the help of his friend pays Heath Ledger with his bad boy image to date Kat and so Bianca can date. Complications ensue with another student (Joey) who also fancies Bianca. Julia Syles(Kat)plays it absolutely perfectly and Heath Ledger is the perfect foil in pursuing her. Look for the scene in the music shop where he almost stalks her and the witty banter is fantastic. Buy it now!!!!

10 things I love about this film!!
1. Storyline is supreme2. Heath Ledger is brilliant!3. Julia Stiles plays Kat so well4. It had me in stitches laughing at points5. Still gives me tingles even afer about the 40th time of watching6. Slightly different to all the other teen romantic comedies7. Despite what people say, it isn't as cheesy as some other movies8. The acting is of top quality9. Even for someone who doesn't like these kind of movies (i.e. my brother) enjoys it10. It has become my favourite film of all time!Seriously, I cannot stop watching it! I love it! It appeals to the teenage girl in me as well as the strong minded (I hope!) woman in me! The soundtrack to the film is amazing and this film honestly had me near to tears at points. I can't believe i didn't find it sooner!Buy this film, you seriouly will not regret it! Come on, it's not a bad price either!!

A good buy
First of all I think it's important to state that I'll be forty soon and still managed to thoroughly enjoy that film. So don't make an excuse of not being a teenager any more. This movie works for adults as well, thanks to the witty dialogue and the good performances of the two lead actors, Ledger and Stiles.I must say that the other two youngsters are not as good and I can't say I think very highly of their acting abilities. But they never spoil the fun.And as for the few adults in there, Alison Janney is amazing , it is such a pity that she is so little on the screen. She delivers her 'erotically charged 'lines (to put it midly) with such aplomb that you can only wish she had had more encounters with her students. The neurotic father is quite a character as well as is the English lit teacher.Of course there' s nothing intellectual going on here, it's a fun and very light version of the taming of the shrew but it manages to be entertaining without insulting the audience's intelligence and that's quite a feat nowadays!

More Like 10 Things I LOVE About You
10 Things I Hate About You is a rare oddity - it takes the clichéd realm of teen romcom and adds snappy pop-culture laden dialogue, characters with emotions so believable you can't help but feel for them and most importantly actors that were, truly, remarkable. Based on Shakespeare's 'The Taming of The Shrew', 10 Things I Hate About You has the late Heath Ledger playing a character who is something of an enigma in Padua High School, and opposite him Julia Stiles playing a girl with a hatred for just about everybody, in her own words; 'I don't like to do what people expect. Why should I live up to other people's expectations instead of my own?'.It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, but most of all it will make you wonder how someone as astoundingly talented as Heath Ledger had to die so young.
