Excellent character-driven science fiction novel
Highly creative, detailed, and original depiction of an alien society and two plausible future human societies, unified with a pleasant exotic spice to its dialog and a poignant human relations story at its core. Some educational insights Caribbean culture; subtly metaphorical in several respects. I'm a devout science fiction fan and this is one of the best novels I've read in the last several years. No reservations: read it!

Great Read!
Only my second read by Nalo, and I'm beginning to crave her writing. This narrative is so concise that I felt like I was in the Caribbean. Love the mythology elements!

Omg
This book takes you so far from reality I almost forgot I was in college and had classes to focus on. I love this book more than anything. The vernacular, plot, writing & direction is spectacular and it’s definitely a good read for those who love to venture out into other realms! I love this book so much! The ending is also bittersweet as well, it makes you crave more and more! Good read.

This is my favorite book now
This is my favorite book now! It is wonderful in so many ways! The language is rich, I love the way Caribbean folklore is used creatively here and the characters are so well developed. It is one of the most imaginative books I have read and it provokes so much thought about history, human nature, science, and psychology. And, it features the best aliens ever!

Disapointing
I simply can not understand why so many people gave this book five stars. The Caribbean dialect it is written in is distracting ( it might not be for someone more familiar with it). And the story is simplistic. It was an Interesting read, and a decent book, but nothing spectacular.

A Magnificent achievement
I don't know where to start. This book is multi-layered telling the story of one little girl who grows to be an independent, famous woman in a very difficult environment. It is much, much, more than a "coming-of-age" story. There is magic and tragedy and all told in a voice (you don't find out whose voice until the end) that uses patois throughout. The world is wonderfully built.

Very interesting book that is linguistically innovative and fun to read
Very interesting book that is linguistically innovative and fun to read. It took me a while to get into it and to adjust to the use of language, but once I did I really enjoyed it.

Spannendes Buch mit Karibikflair. An die Sprache muss man sich etwas gewöhnen, aber die Erzählung ist so futuristisch und fantasiereich zugleich, dass es sich lohnt.

A tale of struggle and triumph through authenticity
I loved this book. I must admit it too me a while to get my head around the patwa even as a 2nd generation Jamaican but once got used to it i followed the story of Tan Tan with enthusiasm and sorrow. I didn't expect the twist and turns, maybe it should come with a trigger warning otherwise it was well written and robust in the building of a Caribbean fantasy world. Definitely on my recommended reading list

Wonderful storytelling.
Took a few chapters to grow on me, the book really takes off when Tan-Tan reaches the land she ends up in and has a chance to grow and become the person she has to be. To talk about the story too much would spoil the vibe but it's a nice sci fi alt universe take on cultures not so much used in sci fi and fantasies, and it is richer for it. I will be devouring Hopkinson's books in the near future. What a great voice.

Darkly original
This book has a voice all of its own. Better with narration probably. The imagination of the author made the world unlike any other I’ve read about. It has its own flavour inspired by the carnival traditions that will be unfamiliar to many. There’s a very dark point in the middle that got to me but it only gave strength to the main character and the story. I’m glad I kept going.

An amazing author writing a non-Eurocentric setting.
Nalo Hopkinson is like combining Octavia Butler and Roger Zelazny! She is perfect!
