Disappointing at best
The better songs are at the end.The first dozen or so are all flip side material.Somebody needs to mix a Flamingos meet the Moonglows. Then you would have enough good do wops for a useable CD.rgds..Clutch cargo

Career-spanning overview of one of great doowop groups
The story of the Flamingos span several decades; this compilation covers all the key recording periods: earliest days on Chance Records, including Golden Teardrops, arguably the finest example of doo wop ever recorded, complete with the tremulous, inimitable lead of Sollie McElroy.Later days on Chess yielded a number of hits with a different lead (Nate Nelson) and the time on End, heavy on the strings, included the spectacular arrangement of I Only Have Eyes for You, covered note-for-note by Art Garfunkel. With each move to a different label the group became more polished; I prefer the rougher, earliest sides and would have liked a greater concentration on them but others may differ. The key thing is that the collection covers all the labels and there is even a rarity - Ladder of Love - from what was apparently an unfulfilling period with Decca. As Jay Warner says, for sheer consistency the Flamingos are difficult to beat, but what a pity that there isn't at present a legitimate release of all their Parrot/Chance sides.Postscript: A CD entitled The Crests vs. the Flamingos is currently available in Marketplace for around a fiver, though I don't know how good or bad the transfers may be. But as the Flamingos material is drawn from their highly creative time at Parrot Records and as there is very little overlap with the Rhino CD it's worth a punt. As they are now all public domain, however, I can't see why some enterprising company can't issue a compilation of the all the Parrot and Chance sides, which would fit on a single CD with room to spare.A further postscript: an enterprising compnany, taking advantage of the UK's public domain laws, has gone further: a two CD set entitled Dream of a Lifetime: 11953-1959 was issued by Jasmine Reocrds in 2010, including all the Chance, Parrot and Chess sides plus some early End recordings. Audio quality is good but not great - but this is the most comprehensive collection issued to date, and at a bargain price. Like the Rhino compilation, however, there is only one exmaple of their Decca period, Ladder of Love.
