Q: What is the difference between the VCMA 20UL, the 20ULS, the 20ULT, and the 20ULST?

Absolutely no difference. Check out the little giant pump website. The spec sheet for each of these models links to the same exact pdf - a generic pdf for the VCMA-20 series. Q: There are so many models. Which one do I buy? I need to pump 8 ft high and 55ft down a long basement to sump pump.

The Little Giant 554421 (model: VCMA-20UL) should have no problem with 8ft high, and a 55ft distance. Mine pumps water about 8ft high and a 30ft distance. It has been extremely reliable even though I don't clean it out as often as I probably should. I have had it for 8 or so years and it runs year-round (air-conditioner in the summer, humidifier in the winter). I did have to replace the check valve, but that was probably due to going too long without being cleaned.

Q: How many gallons does it pump in an hour?

The unit is rated at 80gph but is designed as an intermittent use pump. If it is put to use in constant flow it will burn out. It had a 1/2 gallon tank with a float switch activator. Is designed to pump up to 1/2 gallon maybe 3 x a day only

Q: If pump fails, will water spill out or back up in the input line? I want to use with dehumidifier which has auto stop, prefer it to back up.

What is your definition of pump fail: motor does not work; hose leaks; plastic frame broken? Depends on kind of fail, reaction would be different. Pump works in the on-off cycle. When water reservoir full, pump energized. Output line has valve, which works in one direction and prevents backward flow. Valve reaction is independent from pump mode. I use the same pump in my house for dehumidifier.
