You could easily put it together and use it without putting on the wheels “casters”. It is flat on the bottom and could sit on the floor or whatever you wanted to sit it on. It’s 36 inches with the wheels. Approx 32 without

It is not thin wood or particle board. It is thick and pretty heavy. I would think you could sand it down and stain it a darker color without any problem.

hello: The extension is awesome By the way , we have it open permanately. I should have purchased along time ago. I would recommend having it put together by Amazon's handy man for the 99 bucks, its worth it. the dimentions are 17.5" without and almost 29.5" open. We have 2 stools that push under the open leaf perfectly and they are nicely cushioned stools. Hope this helps. Thanks
