good read
I am really enjoying this series so far it's slower than book one not really much happening little action scene here and there but the progress of the relationship between Prophet and Tom in this book continues with the same as first book Prophet takes the leading roll thought out this book which kind of overshadowed Tom's time to shine IMO and my only complaint is i think the book is expensive for what it was with less pages than first book was.:-)

It just gets better
I only write reviews when moved by really good content so here you go.It started out with the Men of Honour series and this spin off series is excellent. Many authors tend to lose something in the content over time but SE Jakes just gets better and better.Prophet was a minor character in the Men of Honour series and oh boy the Hell or High Water series does not disappoint. Gritty, well written sometimes with a twist, always with passion. These books are not for the faint hearted or those who don't like MM reads. I do recommend to anyone thinking of reading these that they make more sense in the following order:Read Men of Honour first now 6 books in the series as at Dec 2013, also Free Falling which is a one off but connected to characters in these books, then the two books currently in this HH series. Early in 2014 another spin off called Dirty Deeds is due out. So far these books have just got better and better and Ms Jakes is a prolific writer who doesn't keep her fans waiting long.

Loved the progression of Prophet and Toms hard won love ...
A rare thing - a sequel that matches the first book. Loved the progression of Prophet and Toms hard won love story, loved finding out abut Toms background, loved the new Orleans setting and loved the plot. There are so many plot lines woven into this series - John, Prophets flashbacks/ghost, his health issues, Cillian - the amount of thought thats gone into this is very impressive.

well worth the price!
Another great book, nice to see a different side to the characters and to explore further into the world around them. Highly recommend this book to anyone who likes the genre.

Love it!
I like all of S E Jakes's books. I sometimes have difficulty with her writing - there's sometimes 'stream of consciousness' stuff in there when the protagonists are thinking to themselves. But the stories rip along, the characters are nicely fleshed out and sympathetic and I don't feel like I'm re-reading the same story with different characters when each new book comes along like you do with some authors. If you put to one side the statistically unlikely incidence of gay chaps in a single employment situation and get reading, this is a great addition to Jake's books. Prophet and Tom sort their differences out, there's lots of hot sex, edgy dialogue and actual plot that is not romance driven. Buy it. It's fab.

Truly: A love story... amidst the danger, adrenaline, failure and truth
From the first sentence, this one chomped down on me like a gods damned rabid alligator (yeah, you'll see) and did not let go. Thrashing me and my heart about amongst the emotional depth charges, only to try and lull me into the "maybe this will work out" lazy-boy, even though I KNEW it could not be that easy, to breathe, to anything, no way. And it wasn't, not for Tommy and Prophet. Not for me.For these two men, they are a living twisting wild ball of contradictions, ceaseless, and yet they and their myriad imperfections fit together, no matter how much one or other or both of them fail at taking advantage of it all. I think they always recognize it, they see it and want it but the actual "doing" of it is always the challenge. They are still each other's keys.Page 69 - no joke - and my entire body warmed. So well done. Yes, it's hot as hell, but that connection, it's a driving, suffocating, exalted, maddening, loving connection. This is more than a "romance", these are two people are clawing for each other, for what they do and mean to each other. Makes me want to roar.Imagery. Who talks about imagery anymore? Well, this story is full of it. Fingers threaded together as the two of them figure out what's next, because they know there is a next but how the hell do you get there and without hurting each other too badly, without losing each other in the process? This is their journey, given flight by that one image: fingers threaded together amidst the chaos, attraction, fear and sex. As frustrating as it can be sometimes to watch, many a time the journey must be taken in order to truly arrive, not just at the destination, but with the person who should be there with you. No short-cuts.It's still so obvious to me that these two men will never be rid of each other, never separated, truly, ever. The consistency of character is there in both Tommy and Prophet, and this time: Proph takes care of Tommy (well, everyone - tries to, anyway) and Tom sees the real person Proph is but can't yet allow himself to become. Switch the names in the sentence above and it still plays true. For each other, they quell that fire inside, the kind of fire that sometimes threatens to consume if faced with no opposition in the form of love and understanding and acceptance. They are each other's best kind of wet, juicy, thick, indestructible blanket.***SPOILER***Prophet thinking, while some doorway palm reader is trying read his on his way to question someone in order to help Tommy out of a situation: "... didn't bother telling her that Tom was really the only one who could predict his future and it had nothing to do with his voodoo s***." ***END SPOILER*** Like I said, he and Tom both realize they are the "ones" for each other, but allowing yourself to act on that truth isn't always easy. Most of us can tell when a story is trying too hard to maintain the reality, when it wavers between making us believe it and yet sometimes separating us from it. In this story, I was sucked in until nothing but ashes remained, leaving me to bump around on the lightest of breezes. On that note, this story is... heavier. Less one-liners and more emotionally charged particles, serious subjects addressed. This makes sense since Tommy and Prophet know each other better, which means we get to know them better. I want to know these men. I don't always feel that `pull' of wanting to shake and help, wear sandwich boards, hire a skywriter in order to get two characters to cut through all of the junk and get to being truly together. I felt that here. But as I said earlier, they had to go through every word of this journey to end up where they do. I'll be taking this journey with them again.A favorite scene, small but it shouts volumes from the proverbial mountaintops: ***SPOILER****when Proph is putting the leather bracelet back onto Tommy's wrist. ***END SPOILER*** The most beautiful punch to the heart, it makes you feel alive. There are a couple of things that I can see maybe some readers noticing and I'll mention them here: there were a lot of side characters mentioned, probably as an attempt to paint the picture of this taking place mostly in Tom's hometown and how that affects him still. For some, this could maybe lessen the impact of the hell he survived that was his childhood there. The other is that it felt like there was one too many "dangerous situation where Tom and Proph were forced to be alone together" in order to work out all of the crap between them. Now, neither of these negatively affected my enjoyment of this read because, I mean, c'mon, I'm not sure there is such a thing as too much Tommy and Prophet, but I can see where maybe some will feel a bit of indulgence there. But who cares? I didn't. This is their story, so indulge away. FEED ME.I've already plastered so many words onto the screen here, and I could do so many more, this story's length and depth warrant them all. However, I already feel as if I've rambled and yet not truly landed on why these two men slice right through me. What I know is, like a grappling hook, they embedded themselves, deeply, inside my heart and my gut and everywhere else.I'll end with this: I hesitate to compare because they are different books in many a sense, but for those of you who read Catch a Ghost and were on the fence, the tone of this part of their story is simply different and I'm willing to bet your doubts will be set aside, if not vanquished. If you read CAG and loved it as much as I did, then this story will fill you to capacity with... well, I'm not sure there is any other way to say it than: simply stated, this turned out to be a love story. A wonderfully crafted love story filled with danger, anxiety, gentleness, messy sexy, gruffness and acceptance.I love it. I will read it again. I recommend it. There. Go read. Fill yourself with the fawesomeness that is Tommy 'n Proph.

Loving this series!
I'm really enjoying this series. There is a great balance of action, with a mystery or two to solve, great characters who might be more than a little broken, some steamy sex scenes and a storyline that keeps me turning page after page.I can't wait to read the rest of the series and see what happens with Prophet and Tom next, and would definitely recommend this series.

It's really never too late
This book was phenomenal. Picking up four months after the first book we start off with Tom and Prophet apart from each other, Prophet doing jobs in his own and Tom ordered to stay in Eritrea. But orders and missions can't keep them apart forever and when a hurricane brings them together the results are just as volatile as their first pairing, but maybe deeper. As is true of the first book, these two are great at speaking to each other through sex, but not so great at actually speaking. Which is why I loved that Jakes makes them need to talk to survive what's going on. We learned about Prophet's past in the first book and what kept him apart from his partners. Now we get to learn about Tom's past, his bad luck, and why he left Prophet to protect him. It is not easy by any means but it is so well written.Sometimes moving forward means letting go of the past. Other times it means confronting it. With all of the skeletons in their closets Tom and Prophet have to face their past but they also need each others strength to come out the other side. This book shows that more than anything. Things are not completely resolved by any means at the end but they are changed. An excellent book in a continually excellent series!

Once you start with this series, your are in absolute danger to become highly addicted to it!
With Prophet and Tommy SE Jakes has created a pair of complex, strong, haunted and deeply wounded men who rival Ty&Zane from my all time favourite „Cut and Run“ series. Nevertheless Prophet & Tommy are unique as persons with a hell of secrets, uncountable inner and visable injuries and furious fighting personalities. Contrary to other stories there is no misunderstanding because of no talking. They do talk, straight forward, brutally honest and always hope to so scare the other one away. But this doesn't work as both men are just perfect for each other. They care deeply for each other, despite Prophet pushing Tom as far away as possible while Tom picking another EE partner to keep Prophet safe. But running for the hills did not work out this time.Although Proph does not answer, Tom keeps sending him emails trying to re-connect, no matter how slim the chances might be. Then a hurricane is threatening Tom's only relative and he is far away. Without asking himself why, Proph drives to New Orleans to help Tom's aunt Della. Proph and Tommy reunite in the middle of the rageing thunderstorm, the perfect background to their explosive relationship. Some of the many loose ends of book one are now futher explained, as we learn more about Tom's past. Still the story feels a bit more constructed this time with all those murderers, hurricane, kidnappers, voodoo cemetaries in the swamp and alligators lining up just to make our heros look good. The relationship between Proph and Tom is still fast pace, one time heartwrenching tender then sexyhot explosive then rough again.Although there are many loose threads left (again), book 2 ends on a more „reader soothing“ note. This time Proph and Tom are together and really, honestly talking of the slight possibility of a future together despite all their combined ghosts and haunted pasts. Man up, guys!!! I am ready for book 3 now!!!

Awesome follow up
When Tom choose another partner than Prophet he did it for the Prophets safety and then Prophet left EE LTD. But he didn't know that it would end up in months of no communication and over 100 un answered emails.Prophet tried everything to leave the past behind and almost succeeded until he breaks and reads Tom's messages. And then the comment about him being decent in bed brings his temper and feelings right back. Now he finds himself down in New Orleans helping Tom's aunt prepare for a hurricane .Then Tom unexpectedly shows up and the heat between them flairs up again and they can't stay away from each other anymore. And it doesn't take long until Tom finds himself a murder suspect and the ghosts of his past comes out in full force. So Prophet and Tom has to decide if people as damaged as them can learn to trust and how to get Tom off the hook.

Great chemistry, hot sex, interesting story
Long Time Gone picks up where Catch a Ghost left off. Tom is in Eritrea sending daily emails to [email protected] , not getting any answers and bemoaning the belated fact that he could take better care of Prophet if he was with him instead of partnering with Cope to protect him from his Cajun Voodoo bad luck curse. Prophet is off doing black op jobs and sulking about the fact that Tom didn’t choose him as a partner; but luckily reads Tom’s gazillion emails the night before he decides to go major league dark – and ends up in NOLA to save Tom’s Aunt Della from the incoming hurricane. Also luckily Tom decides to disregard a direct EE order and also ends up in NOLA to take care of his aunt; leading to Prophet and Tom having quite the explosive reunion in the middle of the hurricane – apparently on the front lawn.Tommy and Prophet have amazing chemistry, the sex is hot because the emotion behind it is intense – if not “classically” romantic – it’s clear these guys need each other, neither are accustomed to being so emotionally invested and vulnerable and while they don’t quite know what to do with it and how to maneuver it a lot of the time – they also know they don’t want to lose it. And they have the most entertaining banter. As the hurricane passes Tommy and Proph are still in the bayou and of course @#$% starts to happen and Tom’s past comes barreling up to bite him on the butt with a vengeance. While Tom is being framed for murder he has no choice but to allow Prophet in and let him help solve the mystery from his tortured childhood (and in the process Prophet promises eventual reciprocation in letting T. help him with the mystery of John and issue with Sadiq) – Oh, and also learns he has a thing for alligator kink – seriously – it’s a thing.

Review: Long Time Gone
My Rating: A- Enjoyed A LotOriginally posted on That's What I'm Talking AboutLong Time Gone opens four months after the conclusion of Catch a Ghost, with Tom on assignment with his partner, Cope… the partner Tom chose over his lover, Prophet. During those four months, Prophet has been MIA and Tom has sent him emails daily: each a little more desperate and revealing than the previous. Then there is Prophet. A man close to the edge of utter destruction and ready to leave his life completely behind to take a deep undercover covert operation. However, before he says yes, he decides to finally read the 122 emails Tom sent him, and suddenly, Proph finds himself on the way to New Orleans to take care of Tommy’s aunt.Oh, Long Time Gone is JUST what I needed following my read of Catch a Ghost! The opening is heartbreaking when the reader sees how much Tom misses Prophet - how desperate he feels. It hurt to read, but it is necessary for readers to see how difficult it was for Tom to choose Cope over Proph. And this opening set up their reunion perfectly, allowing for all of the unspent emotion after four months apart to explode in one of the hottest, most passionate scenes I have ever read. I swear, my Kindle caught fire.Tom and Prophet come a long way during the pages of Long Time Gone; however, it is not a smooth journey. Their story is full gritty fervor, with both characters desperate for more yet afraid that there is no future possible. The story of their love hits every emotion—highs and lows, and I have fallen for the pair. With this second story, the reader is privy to more of the detailed backstory of each Tom and Prophet, creating three-dimensional characters and giving real meat to their issues and conflicts. I appreciate Ms. Jake’s sublime world-building and character development, making Long Time Gone a hard-to-put-down read. While Tom and Prophet’s building romance is the core of the story and series, Long Time Gone shares much of Tom’s backstory as he returns home only to find himself with more bad luck. While trying to help out his aunt’s neighbors, Tom comes across the dying body of one of his childhood tormentors. Tom is accused of murder, and soon he finds himself back in a web of deception and lies. The mystery behind this death, as well as others, relates directly to Tom’s past, and I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going on. Getting Tom to open up and come clean with both himself and Prophet added additional grit to the story. As the conclusion of the book neared, I found myself a bit confused - or maybe a better word is flustered. I appreciate where the author took Proph and Tommy - it is well done. However a lot goes down, and I really want to read the next story to figure out what is going on. I am still very leery of Cillian - Proph’s CIA neighbor who flirts with Proph non-stop. I am also extremely curious about Prophet’s former SEAL teammates, who are brought up near the conclusion of the book. I worry that they will be another roadblock for Proph and Tom’s happiness. Also, there is some additional information regarding key characters from the first book, John and Sadiq, but nothing concrete. In conclusion, Long Time Gone is a wonderful follow up to Catch a Ghost. I really like the forward progress of the mens' relationship. While there is an interesting, exciting story in the book, the romance is the central piece. I appreciate how far the author took the pair - making their mutual growth both meaningful and realistic within the bounds of the characters. My heart yearns for this pair to be together, and I know they will be eventually, so meanwhile, I am appreciative of all the ups and downs of their journey. The story is utterly sexy, with both touching and explicit scenes, I am completely ensnared by Proph and Tommy and their story.

Rating: 4 stars
This type of series isn’t usually my cup of tea, but I find myself really enjoying this one. I love both Prophet and Tom and think they have wonderful chemistry together. It was wonderful seeing Blue and Mick again. I really liked Tom’s aunt and her two house guests and I liked that we get more of Tom’s backstory in this book. I’m really hoping that we finally get some explanation of what is going on with John in the next installment. All in all, a really good second book in the series.

What You See is What You Get--a Brilliant Adventure and Love Series
The two introductory paragraphs appear in my reviews of each of the books in this series.A spin-off of the enormously entertaining Men of Honor series, the Hell or High Water series fleshes out the personality, history and foibles of MOH mystery man, Prophet, an ex_SEALs and CIA operative who is better on his own because he carries too much baggage for two. Into his life comes Tom Boudreaux, an ex-FBI agent whose Cajun background and high intensity attitude threatens to blow the partnership apart before it gets going. But, boy, when it gets going, it goes so far and so fast that you will be blown back in your chair (or bed) by the intensity of their professional, and more importantly, personal relationship.Prophet and Tom had a rocky beginning to their partnership, and their romance--although neither would call their personal relationship romantic. It's pure lust and all out war, hardly ever between the sheets, and plenty of times well out of the way of them. Tom has disappeared on assignment for the security company he and Prophet work for, and it is driving Prophet up the wall. Fortunately, he has a convenient out to distract him--a hurricane bearing down on New Orleans where Tom's aunt resides, and where maybe Tom will also reappear in Prophet's life. Not only does this magnificent stud come back to Prophet, but so does his incredibly complicated, violent past--resulting in a macabre tale of the New Orleans culture which will entertain, horrify and please you no end. The love story takes hold here and the understanding two stubborn men reach is never spoken....for reasons you have to read to understand. Hypnotic every step of the way.

Tom & Prophet Blew my mind!
Long Time Gone is the second book in the Hell or High Water Series and I have to say HOLY EFF S.E. has done it again and Lordy Lordy Prophet is the man. He is so moody and unpredictable that he had me all over the emotions map because one minute he was okay and the next he wasn't because he would shut his feelings off and become hard and distant.Prophet and Tom are no longer partners. Prophet knew he could not have a partner and after Tom got hurt he definitely knew he needed to stay far away from Tom. Tom decided not to push Prophet any more so he took another partner and is far away from prophet when things start to go south for them. Prophet makes some decisions that are hard but he makes them none the less and decides he is going to go off on his own and do his own work. But New Orleans is getting hit with the worst hurricane to ever hit Katrina. Tom has an aunt there and Prophet decides to go and make sure she is okay because she is alone and Tom is out of the country on work for the EE LTD. As Prophet flies down there and gets Tom's aunt prepared for the hurricane Tom hears some noise outside and realizes he sees someone. When he goes out he sees that it is Tom. Tom has come home to be with the only family he has to make sure she is okay.As Tom and Prophet prepare for the hurricane to pass they talk and realize they have some unfinished business. As they are talking and watching the hurricane come to an end they decide to go out and check on the neighbors when Tom discovers his neighbor has been murdered and he becomes the number one suspect. As Prophet tries to help Tom solve the murder and clear his name Prophet gets some crazy news from Cillian and Prophets past is coming back to haunt him. Prophet unable to believe what he is told tries to get Tom to safety and figure out where to go next and what to do next. Could it true the information he was given or is it a sick joke????

Another kick ass read by Jakes.
A super read. This one has Tom on missions with Cope. A Cope he chose as his partner when he walked away from Prophet.Of course he still e-mails Prophet every day and gets no answer.Prophet walked away from EE and has been doing black ops jobs all over the world. His former boss at EE is trying like hell to get him back but Prophet ain't buying.Prophet hasn't read Tom's e-mails but when he does he heads for New Orleans to help Tom's Aunt.Seems that a hurricane is headed for New Orleans and Tom's boss won't let him take the time to head for New Orleans and his Aunt. Of course Tom will be going anyway and Cope will cover for him.So begins a pretty damned good read. This one has Prophet, Tom, Aunt Della and her two housemates, a man named Etienne, a kid named Remy, another man named Charlie, Miles, Donny, happenings from Tom's past, a Sheriff who helped cover up a murder, a new Sheriff who thinks Tom's guilty of anything and everything, alligators, murder, a hurricane, Prophet getting a better idea of Tom's voodoo past, Tom landing in jail, a Tom who tries to get Prophet to open up more and Prophet and Tom getting it done.Five Stars and then some

4 ⭐️I enjoyed the continuation of Tom and Prophet’s storyline. I liked that this one focussed on Tom’s background and helped him deal with the things he can’t change in his past.I enjoy Prophet. I like his brand of honesty. I still think it must be exhausting being Prophet with everything he has going on and all the smoke and mirrors.Looking forward to learning more about his seal team in the next one.

One of the Best Books I've Read This Year
Wowza, wowza, wowza. I thought Catch a Ghost was incredible, then along came Long Time Gone, the second in the Hell or High Water series. I can not do a review that will do this justice.Tommy and Prophet have been separated for 4 months. Neither has been able to forget the other, but Tommy tries with new partner Cope working for EE. Proph tries with black ops jobs that have danger quotients off the charts. They are brought back together by a hurricane that threatens Tommy's Aunt Della in the bayou. Proph decides he will go down to Aunt Della, bringing every thing one could need to survive. What he doesn't know is Tommy is headed that way, too. Or did he? The meeting is marred by Tommy being charged with the murder of a man who shares Tommy's past. The past and the present converge to expose Tommy and Prophet's secrets. Finally, the reader is allowed to see what formed these two complex men. Many secrets are revealed and some are still hidden. I found myself repeating over and over, "come on guys get it together, you love each other and you are good for each other". There is a great supporting cast, with the author setting the scene for Cillian and Mal to come forward in future books. The sex is amazing, the action full throttled. If that isn't enough, there is the bonus of learning Prophet's real name.I have to say that this is the first time I have found a couple that challenges Ty and Zane for best couple ever. For me Tommy and Prophet are the best couple ever. No that is not blasphemy, read it and see! Put Creedence Clearwater Revival on while you read this. Born on the Bayou was perfect. I give it a bayou full of stars, cher.

Great action, suspense, and true love !!
Great !! Love SE Jakes writing. The men of this series are raw, powerful alpha males, with a high sense of duty, and honor. Prophet and Tommy have been apart, mainly to keep each other safe from a serious threat. They work undercover, solve problems, search and rescue, keep secrets, and glide under the radar. Prophet and Tommy are also partners, who are tired of being apart. When the hurricane hits town, they bed down together, and the sex is amazingly hot. Then they move it indoors, and continue on the washer dryer while their soaked clothes dry !Bless the spin cycle !After Tommy gets arrested and framed, Prophet and his team are there to help. It's a tangled web of lies, old wounds and trickery, that must be figured out. The wrongs done to Tommy and Etienne must be righted. Incredible, fast paced book with deep characters, and holds your attention all the way through. Terrific side characters, the storm, suspense, evil men, good men, and wonderful writing make this worth your while !!Highly recommend ! ENJOY !!!.
