All You Need is .... Love?
A rollicking great movie experience, and one of my personal favourites.Yes, there are a few inconsistencies in the character development of Major/Private Cage - Superhero, but it's a complex issue and to enjoy the movie you have to let go of the need for perfection. They should have died at the end, but they didn't, because people don't want that. Because at the end of the day, that's impossible. A little bit of romance threading its way through a story gives something back to you and like it or not, that's the way we operate. Because surely what makes us human is our ability to love. If you don't like it, then take a number and sit at the back.Make no mistake however, this is a superhero movie: Vrataski being superhero #1 and Cage, superhero #2, forged in the heat of battle. Remember what Master Sergeant Farrell said? "Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the fiery crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in." The only difference between this and most other 'superhero' films is that there will be no sequel, no cashing in on a big franchise, because at the end of the last reel, it's over, and a new reality is born.Action sequences, general photography and CGI are all outstanding, as are the fighting suits and multitudinous bits of military ordnance that get sprayed all over the place. As for the screenplay - it's awesome - the minor characters have a chance to breathe and we're drawn into the pitiful lives of a bunch of redneck grunts juxtaposed, as they are, with The System, that mindless conglomeration of politics and brass that, if it had been left up to them, would have doomed the world. And who knows? Maybe they will yet.A truly excellent film, with an uplifting, albeit slightly corny ending. I mean come on, you know the Major was going to get to 'Rose' in the end, didn't you? After all that Hell, a man needs a little taste of Heaven.

Great movie let down slightly by the ending
For a brainless action movie this was actually pretty good. I enjoyed the flashes of humour and although I'm not really a fan of Tom Cruise, I thought Emily Blunt was good in this. Nice to see a strong female character kicking ass and being independent :)I really liked the premise too, kind of Groundhog Day meets War of the Worlds. Yes the science of it is a bit iffy and you can't think too carefully about the concept of time manipulation, but you don't watch this kind of movie for the logic in it. You need to leave your brain at the door and just enjoy it for what it is which is a lot of aliens being blown up and pretty people looking good getting muddy. The CGI is awesome. The mimics were suitably creepy and hard to track. The suits were great and it was good that they were all different too. Each character had their own style. The only thing that let the film down for me was the ending. ****SPOILERS**** They should have just left it at the bittersweet moment of humour when the grenades explode and had a run down of the war being won. I hate the schmaltzy American "love has to win through" scenario where they somehow miraculously reset the day to back when they were all alive. Not every film needs a happy ever after and after all the sacrifice in this movie, it would have been a fitting end. ****END SPOILERS****All in all, I enjoyed it.

'ZERO TO HERO' - 'BUT WHO WILL REMEMBER ?'
The Earth is under attack from an Alien race, our weaponry is no match for them.Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is ordered against his will to go into combatativeservice and will be dropped onto the front line of defence on the French shores. The Major can't even stomach the sight of blood, certainly not his own, the missionhe is about to embark upon is almost certainly one in which he will be killed.Branded as a deserter and coward he's been demoted to 'private'On the Beaches of France the Aliens totally overwhelm Earth's attack force includingunlikely combatant William Cage, however he's been thrown into a 'Time-Loop' andarrives back on base on the evening prior to the ill-fated attack. This happens over and over again, he cannot make his new comrades understandthat he knows what will happen next.On the beach he'd met celebrated 'Warrior' 'Rita Vrataski' (Emily Blunt),with the knowledeof what had happened each time around he's able to save from certain death at that momentin time. Each time he returns to the beach he learns a little more and develops his skills and graduallylearn how to fight back.Because 'Rita' also has the memories of her earlier beach encounters with the Aliens, the twobegin to form an alliance, the former Major is put through his paces by 'Rita' he has many skillsto learn.Teaching him new skills, over and over again, preparation is everything, a little knowledgeof what happens next, an advantage ???It seems the only hope Earth has of victory may well depend upon the few. There is some seriously enjoyable action sequences along the way as 'William' and 'Rita'progress a little further on each re-visit.There are also several light hearted moments that are sure to make you smile. The film is without question an enjoyable movie experience indeed.Great special-effects, in 3-D the action is certainly in-your-face so to speak, as the spiderlike creatures are hurled toward you (great-stuff)Great picture and sound quality throughout.Special Features (in 2-D)* STORMING THE BEACH - Drive into the trenches for a gritty look of creating the filmsepic sci-fi batte.* WEAPONS OF THE FUTURE - Watch Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt tackle the challengesof strapping on exo-suits to become super soldiers.* ON THE EDGE WITH DOUG LIMAN - Follow the passion-fueled director as he confrontsthe pressure of making a futuristic war film look real.* PLUS DELETED SCENES AND MORE
