A balanced view of womens issues and how they benefit men
Well written look at the past, present and future of womens suffrage and issues. A real eye opener. The overall message I took from this book was we must accept, value and support each other through life.

This book is the heart behind todays talk of equally and treatment of women
This is a book about more than the suffragette movement. The great granddaughter of Enmeline Pankhurst is its author, and she gives us the background to it but so much more; Not just how awful it was but what wasnt acheived even when the vote was allowed for women it wasnt till 10 years on that actually the same ages and classes of women to men could vote! Something I didn't know before. There are large chapters devoted to the climate then and now so we csn see it in its context and marvel at the bravery of these women, and their sense of humor too. The book teaches us about what Britain was like and how it has changed in that 100 years, including a hot topic of today, eaual pay or rather the gradual narrowing of the gap. I recommend this book as it is full of facts relavent to its title and helps us to think of the suffragette movement in a fuller way than we have been taught but perhaps more as it is a history of Britains attitude to women's rights and treatment of women.

A Must Read For All
Highly readable and very accessible, Helen Pankhurst has brought together many strands of thought, and giving me a far clearer appreciation of womens’ issues - of those dilemmas of past and present that continue to pervade our culture. An important book that really needs a wide readership. I love the simplicity with which she writes, which is deceptively clear and informative, always engaging interest. Highly recommended.

A reasoned and rational account of the women's movement....
Deeds Not Words is just the right book for our times. It is written by Helen Pankhurst, grand-daughter of Sylvia Pankhurst (our favourite Suffragette!) and celebrates and evaluates the centenary of the first time (some) British women were given the right to vote. It gives a brief history of the Suffragette movement and the rationale behind it but follows on with the myriad of issues that still affect women today. There are chapters on Politics, Money, Identity, Violence, Culture and Power – all containing fascinating nuggets of information. I liked the final two chapters which reflected on the progress made and the work still to be done. It focuses mostly on the situation in UK but examples from the wider world are given as necessary. (NB This was published too early to include the #metoo movement but I am sure Helen Pankhurst would have lots to say about that.)This is not an anti-male polemic but rather a reasoned and rational account of the struggle for equality for half of our population. It is written in a clear, accessible way and is a great guide to anyone who wants to know more about the women’s movement.Highly recommended.
