We already had an opening from a previous cat door in our wall leading out to the backyard and he had to modify the opening that was needed for this door. (I am lucky to have a guy that can do these things) We have been experiencing electronic cat door fatigue for a year. We had a PetMate door for about 5 years that was chipped to our previous cat who had a 9 digit chip. He passed in 2022. We got a new furbaby in 2023 and he had a 9 digit chip, and it worked fine for a while. Then we had an intruder cat (the orange menace) pound on that door until he got in. The company said he shouldn't have been able to get in, but he did. Anyway, found out it was a neighbors cat and he preferred to live at our house 90% of the time. We got him chipped (it was a 15 digit chip) so we wouldn't be awakened by the pounding on the cat door.. Much to our surprise and our frustration trying to use the old door, it wouldn't work with his chip. We got another PetMate door and it wouldn't take a 9 digit chip. After sending two doors back, we just got a regular door they can go in and out and decided we didn't need an electronic one. Unfortunately, another neighbors cat has decided he wanted to come into our house and wanted to fight with both cats. That was the last straw, we don't need anymore cats! Sorry for the book about our situation. I researched cat doors again and found the SureFlap door that would take a 9 and 15 digit chip. We can't do the chipped collars because they lose them in cat skirmishes. It was more money than I wanted to spend, but for peace of mind we had to do it. We got the door in a couple of days and we were perplexed because there really wasn't too much info on programming. We looked on YouTube and watched a video. Got both little monsters through the door before installation and we hoped for the best that it would work with the simple instructions on YouTube. Of course they were confused, but they caught on after me opening the door. It seems to be working perfectly. No other cat can get in the door now, so safety for the two monsters is secured now. The door itself is made with two magnets at the bottom and it closes securely. This is the easiest cat door we have ever used and I am thrilled with how easy it was to program. I really didn't believe it could be that easy. I didn't have to have a book and keep looking at how to program it with battery failure. It does only show one cat, so I'm not quite sure if we did it right, but it works, so we are very happy with the door. The door has a nice appearance and looks sturdy and I hope it lasts for years. So far that has not happened, I spray her with water to deter her from getting too interested in going through. Other than these items the door is great. My dog learned very quickly. I love it. **Q: Does an animals microchip work when installed in an exterior metal door?** A: I'm not sure if it's the metal door causing issues, but it doesn't work for 2 of my 4 cats. All have new microchips. I finally had to turn off the locking feature so they could all use the door. It may also be an issue that they have to stick their head a couple of inches into the tunnel and wait for a couple of seconds to see if the door unlocks? It usually works if I jam them in the door and hold them them there (Yes...they hate this as much as you think!). Highly reliable. ### ⭐ Cats won’t use it - Door too hard to open *by L***N on April 22, 2024* I HATE this door! If you are thinking about buying it, be sure that your cat doesn’t mind pushing really, really hard against the door. It does not open easily and my three cats just won’t push that hard. They put their paws through it but are defeated with how forcefully it pushes back. They don’t understand pushing their head against something so hard to open. I mean, who would. It’s not necessary for the functionality of the features for the door to be so frustratingly difficult to open. There is no training mode where the suction effect is turned off so no easy way to train them to go through the door using treats. Treats only work if they can smell them and get their head close to the treat. In order to do this you have to hold the door open which defeats the purpose of trying to get them to get used to pushing through it. I hate, hate, hate it. Total waste of money for me. I have to tape it open to get them to come in. This is getting them used to feeling the door on their backs, but when I have the door taped that low, they can’t get out. Plus, it doesn’t teach them to push hard against the door. This door SUCKS!!! I wish I had been able to get it installed earlier, but unfortunately, my handyman wasn’t available until after the 30 day return window closed or I’d return it in a heartbeat. The main reason I wanted this door instead of the flap door I was using that allowed any animal to come in and out was to keep an outdoor semi-feral cat that I TNR’d out of the house. She picks on my girls, fights with them and they don’t like her. Well, let me just say taping the door open doesn’t keep her out and, because it’s see through and the last one was opaque, she’s even less afraid to come in through this door. All in all, we spent probably $500 dollars on this door: hub, door, wall tunnel and installation. I read the other reviews where people said that their cat just refused to push through it. I thought because my cats were already used to a cat door that the resistance of this door wouldn’t be a deterrent. I WAS WRONG. So very wrong. I’ve spent hours with high value treats: Churu, freeze-dried minnows, fish, but it’s very difficult to entice them when the door has to be closed and the treat is on one side and they are on the other. The scanner works okay, but if you have to tape the door open for training purposes it doesn’t tell you who came in and who went out. So now I have a hole in my wall, an unhappy husband, $500 dollars gone that I didn’t really have and less security than I had before. I thought it would be great to have a door that keeps out unwanted cats and has a curfew so that a cat sitter wouldn’t have to manually close/lock the door, but right now, this set up is not going to work for a cat sitter. I can’t say this enough, I HATE, this door. If you buy it, install it immediately and start trying to train your cats to go through it immediately so that you are able to return it if your cats refuse to push through it. I’ll probably have it removed and try to sell it on eBay, or something, but I’m sure I’ll take a bath. I had to give this review at least one star, but if not for the rules it would get no stars.
