READY TO PLANT NOW GROW YOUR OWN RED ONIONS The soil needs to be well-drained fertile soil. You are now ready for planting, onions need to be planted in rows (also known as drills). Plant the onions approximately 3cm deep so that the necks are just protruding the soil and space the onions about 12cm apart to allow plenty of growing space. Check a couple of days later for bulbs that have been disturbed by birds and animals and replant. Over the coming months water sparingly and weed.
