The Man Behind the Fantastic Machines.
The one and only bio on electrical wizard Kenneth Strickfaden. Those familiar with fantasy/horror/sci fi film history know of the magical electric machines that were such a vital part of these films, but not much is known about the man behind the machines, Kenneth Strickfaden. This book presents as much information as is available about him, simply because not a tremendous amount of data is there to be found. Strickfaden loved to discuss and display his machines, but was never forthcoming about speaking about himself.Through exhausting and difficult research, the author has presented as much as we are likely to ever know about him. Filled with pictures, some well known, and others I had never seen before, along with a time line of his life, it is an enjoyable read, and one I highly recommend.

A compelling biography
As a sci-fi buff growing up and watching those sci-fi movies I always wondered where those awesome special electrical effects came from. In those days special effects (FX) were not computer generated but in fact done live. This book answers the question of where these electrical FX came from. A compelling as well as fascinating read, making you want to revisit those films again and head to the rental store just to see those FX once again.

Not what I was hoping
As a fan of the 1931 Frankenstein movie, I was hoping for more technical detail than what the book provided. To be fair, this is an autobiography and to be honest, an autobiography of a fairly “average” person. I learned a few tidbits here and there and I was happy for those (like how much he was paid for the Frankenstein effects). Overall, the book is worth a skim, but barely so.
