The exciting saga of ambitious men tempestuous women and stormy seas! Set in England in the 1860s when British naval strength was the envy of Europe this saga charts the fortunes of an ambitious clever and determined ship owner whose private life is more tempestuous than the seas he sails. James Onedin (Peter Gilmore) is the son of a waterside shopkeeper who has died and left him with no inheritance. All James has is a legacy of 25 franks and a shrewd business mind. Despite his scheming sister and her husband who run a rival shipping company he is resolute in his attempt to start a shipping line in a changing world. Onedin is ruthless but farsighted and with steam a possibility for the future he swiftly embarks on his rise from impoverished seaman to wealthy ship owner and founder of The Onedin Line.

Onedin Line series
The Onedin Line is superb fictional account of one man's ambition to build a shipping empire with his family from humble beginnings as many did in the Victorian times. I Would recommend watching the previous two series first although they work as stand alone stories. It was set in Liverpool and mostly filmed on historical locations with surviving sailing ships from about the time. The direction has a certain style and verve with people actually eating real food and acting on moving ships. The many hours unfold a story that is both subtle and amusing within admirable historical accuracy that refers to many real events. The acting can at times be somewhat formulaic and wooden although that is not surprising due to the sheer volume of the series and in any case this is more than offset by the dry humour, intriguing sub plots and James Odedin's eyes. It is worth following for the beautiful scenes from real ships on a real sea in real film alone that would never happen now.

I LOVE ONEDIN LINE
Bought with the rest of the 6 set series of Onedin. I LOVE this series which covers a total of 91 hours and could watch a further 91 ! Peter Gilmore (R.I.P) who passed away a few weeks ago is perfect and was born to play Onedin set in 1800's as we meet the young man desperate to buy his first ship and follow him through all kinds of antics as he works and shimmies his way up to building his shipping empire. Highly recommend this 1970's programme which is one of the best the BBC has produced. Arrived next day, well packaged.

Review for not just Onedin Line series 3 but for the whole series 1 to 8
There is not much to say in this review except that this series is a CLASSIC. Years back watching this series live on T.V. on Sundays evenings was a definite MUST never to be missed. Having now ordered the complete series on D.V.D. I am more than able to re-live the same enjoyment from many years ago. This series is seriously a classic. It is much akin to a precious favourite book which one re-reads from time to time when in the mood. Definitely a KEEPER and delivered as usual to Spain on the exact date given by Amazon.

A great show about seafaring!
the incredible story of a shipping company. It ran in the states even back in the day. And This set is the third set. It has a really good picture quality , all the sets do. And that's good news as many English tv shows were lost from this era. It's in colour and has a great cast that really did a excellent job. The casting was spot on and each set gets better as the series goes' on.

The Onedin Line Complete Series 3
Product information before purchasing was enough for me to order via Amazon. Having already seen series 1&2 on video my Mum who is terminally ill wished to see further series. To that end series 3 & 4 were ordered. Although Dutch imports of the BBC series the quality is excellent. In English with Dutch subtitles that are easily turned off it is brilliant. The delivery time was excellent and the 2 DVD's that I ordered have enhanced my Mum's last few weeks.

Loved this series when it was shown originally and am watching it again on D.V.D. . Still enjoying it very much as it has everything - adventure, romance and intrigue.

Excellent
Cheaper to buy in the Dutch version rather than the UK one, this is great value. The Dutch is on subtitles which can easily be switched off; it is the BBC original drama so in English with great actors. Continues the storylines from the previous two series and well worth watching if you like period drama. Some production values are not the same as now, technically; this 1970s feel doesn't spoil a much-loved adventure series.
