Well written very insightful
We are using this book as a whole school staff PD resource and it has been extremely useful. Tom addresses many of the questions teachers may have to the pit falls of assessment change and to the WHY we need to make change. He gives clear concrete examples with context to classroom and whole school application. Highly recommend this book.

Good, not the best on SBG
While I found it very dry at first, there are a lot of good studies referred to, mindsets to be held and pages I photocopied to use in my own hs classeoom. I'm a teacher interested in doing SBG alone, in a district/school that is not SBG. This wasn't the MOST helpful of all the books I've been studying, but it was not a waste of time.

A necessary addition to your grading practices library!
For those interested in healthy grading practices (e.g. Standards-Based Grading) but are still operating within the constructs of traditional reporting, "Grading From the Inside Out" is a necessary addition to your library. Not only does it lay out the need for grading reform, but it also offers how teachers can adopt these practices/changes while still teaching in schools that require traditional reporting.

Interesting take on grading
Overall a good book on standards-based grading practices. I found some points to be counterintuitive to grading for the visual arts because practice is a large part of the learning process and I feel that if the students do the work, they should receive a grade for it.

A Must Buy!
As a high school teacher who has experimented with standard-based grading the past two years, I can honestly say this is one of the best books within the field of education I have ever read. It lays down the basic mindset needed to shift your views on assessment while not attempting to give you all the answers. Instead, Schimmer guides you to thinking what would work best for your district and classroom. A must buy for those looking to reflect on their teaching and assessments!

Lots of great ideas, but not a lot about how to ...
Typical education book. Lots of great ideas, but not a lot about how to go about doing the changes. What do colleges think of no grades? This is right minded, but will be a hard sell for parents and higher education.

Changing for the better
After 20 years of teaching, I have a changed attitude about grading. I like the idea that failure at the beginning isn't going to harm my students' grades once they improve.

Hmm, Thoughtful Grading
Reading this book for new school year, makes lots of sense since formative and summative assessments are the push at schools. Food for thought. Recommend it.

An asset for Mastery-Based Learning
As an educator in a school system moving towards Mastery-Based Learning, this book was a welcome read. I had heard about it from a Twitter chat I participate in. I am very pleased with the simplicity of the book. It isn't filled with educational jargon or theories, but rather practical applications for today's classrooms. I highly recommend this book!

Very Helpful
The best part was the discussion of what needs to take the place of grading behaviors.

Great book! I saw the author at a conference and decided to buy this book. It did not disappoint. This is a great introduction for those interested in learning more about Standards Based Grading or at least in making small changes towards that and beginning with a Standards Based Mindset.
