Highly recommend this book to get an understanding of addiction and how the drug war facilitates and worsens the problems we face with mass incarceration, stigma and the fact the the drug war has made the problem much worse.

Excellent introduction to the problems caused by the 'war on drugs' and the possible solutions
This is an excellent book. It provides a concise but thorough history of drug prohibition and its political origins. It highlights the very real and widespread damage caused by the 'war on drugs' and the prohibitionist stance taken by many governments. What I supsect will be most interesting for many readers, however, is the discussion of alternative approaches that prioritise harm reduction. Rolles shows how existing approaches to regulating alcohol, tobacco and prescription drugs can be used to help develop models to regulate and control the production and supply of currently illegal substances. He uses examples from recent drug policy initiative around the world to argue that not only do these approaches work in practice, but that they reduce overall harm and lead to positive social and health outcomes. If you've ever wondered how the legalization of drugs could work in practice, this is a must read.
