Brilliant collection of stories that linger
Brilliant collection of stories that linger. I found I loved the characters - really liked their quirky ways and I cared about them. I was sorry when I finished this book as I looked forward to opening it each night. I wish more of her work was on Kindle.

She's up there with Alice Munro as one of the great contemporary (indeed, all time) short story writers. Varied, piercingly observed and moving, these collected works are a treat and a bargain.

Collected stories
I bought this because it was the choice of a member of my book group.I am a fan of short stories, and recently bought the collection of the 6 finalists from the Sunday Times short story competition, but there are so many stories in here that I got bored and found myself dipping in and out of the book. Not that the stories are not good, but just that they are all very American and written in the same style (not unexpected as it is the same author!) but I didn't feel they were particularly inventive. I may finish the book at some time, but I may not bother.

Really good reads of various lengths
Quirky and unexpected story lines, delivered with wit and verve. Very enjoyable stories - some can cover a short bus ride or others are quite extended bedtime reads.

hours of reading pleasure ahead
Lorrie Moore can do everything. She writes short stories for the most part, though she has a new novel coming out soon, and what short stories they are! In many ways they resemble novellas themselves,,,,a true plot line, excellent characters and a satisfying ending. She also has a great sense of humor,,,,laugh out loud in some stories. I would recommend her to anyone who appreciates good writing.

A great surprise
This was a great collection of stories. I am not even certain how I came upon it but it contains many extremely well written short stories that I found surprisingly excellent. I have never heard of this author previously but I will certainly be seeking out more of her work - she seemingly paints with words, you can see the scenes she writes and are left thinking 'wow, I wish I wrote that...or I feel this person's pain...' Fantastic.

j"adore aussi mais je trouve qu"elle ressemble bcp à sylvia plath. elle a gagné comme le concours de seventeen et ses histoires me rappellent beaucoup la prose de Sylvia Plath. Surtout son humour et ses métaphores!

The Best
Lorrie Moore is among the very top tier of contemporary short story writers, or indeed, short story writers of any time period. Her stories are elegant, smart, deeply felt, beautifully crafted, a delight to read. She belongs on every bookshelf next to Carver, Chekhov, Hemingway. In this epic volume you'll find all of the stories from Moore's three previous short story collections: "Birds of America," Like Life," and "Self Help." Also included are four new stories previously uncollected, and four selections from her novel "Anagrams" (Anagrams is somewhat like a collection of stories, so this works). For lovers of Moore's short stories, this book is the proverbial mother load. It's downright criminal that this book a) seems to be out of print, and b) isn't available as an eBook. WTF, publishers? (Luckily, the earlier books from which this collection was compiled are all still in print and available in eBook format.)Read this woman's stories, if not in this volume then in her others. They will make you a richer, wiser, better person.

Some of the best Short Stories EVER!
Lorrie Moore is one of my favorite Short Story writers. In my economy, she's right up there with such denizens as Shirley Jackson and Flannery O'Connor, although obviously each is vastly different (unique) in both content and style. What's common to all three is a delicious sense of humor, a distinct voice and that rarest of abilities to make the 'ordinary' angular and extraordinary. I heartily recommend this Collection to anyone who enjoys short fiction. And I'll add a prediction: Fifty years from now, very few of the "bestselling" authors currently championed by The New York Times will retain any status at all, and most likely will be long forgotten. Not so Lorrie Moore, whose talent is so superior to most of her contemporaries that her stories will endure well into the 21st Century, at least.
