Death Note - Relight Vol.2 [DVD]

More for the hardcore fans
I love Death Note, so this TV special was something I had to add to my collection. My partner however, a more casual fan, didn't like it, and couldn't see the point in watching "a worse version 0f Death Note", as she'd already seen the series and saw this as a stripped down version. This TV special is a re-telling of the series from the perspective of Ryuk, the death god bound to the human in possession of the Death Note book. I enjoyed this special, and the new perspective it gives. The structure and pacing is very different in places, because Ryuk has replaced Light Yagami as the focus of Death Note, so I thought it offered an insight into the way Ryuk interacts with the humans, and his motives and thinking.Looking at it objectively I can completely see why a casual viewer might not enjoy this TV special, but for the fans who are more into Death Note, I would recommend watching this.

Death Note - Relight Vol.2
Basically, it's the 2nd half of the anime Death Note squeezed from 4 hours to 1 and a half hours.--spoilers--A lot changes from the normal series - for example, the mafia plot is omitted, Soichiro Yagami seems to mysteriously disappear, the SPK members are killed by Takada and Mikami, and the ending just didn't seem as powerful, but if you've not seen the original series, it should suite you just fine. The 2nd half of the original series became less interesting with the absence of L, so it helped to watch the 2nd half this way without it seeming dragged out.Still, it sums up a great series, so it deserved a 4th star.

L's Successors
This second anime film retelling the Death Note story follows the action of the series from L's death to the end of the series in an extremely truncated form. This is something of a shame as, while the second half of the series was never as good as the first, it was still interesting and well written. This film squeezes the second half of the series into an hour and a half and as such much of the storyline is excised including much of Mello's storyline and the involvement of Light's father, among other things. On the other hand the animation for this film is good, as is the voice acting on the English dub. In the same way as the previous Relight film this one is most useful for those who haven't seen the original anime or read the manga, if you have you will only be disappointed.
