Solid adaptation... shame about the subtitles.
First of all, yes, the subtitles do contain many mistakes. However, I didn't find that to impede my enjoyment, as they are just silly mistakes that don't cause actual difficulty understanding what's being said. I smiled at one point when the subs made Hattori say what was obviously the exact opposite of his actual meaning -- you could tell as much from the context. On to the anime itself. This is a solid adaptation of the first four volumes. Considering the obvious difficulties of translating Bakuman into an anime -- there's a lot of conversation and explanation to get through -- they've done a remarkably good job of condensing it and keeping the pace flowing while keeping the story unchanged. Enough exposition is retained to keep the story clear, and to keep one of the original series' selling-points, the way it sheds light on how the manga-publishing world works. The characters are accurately portrayed, and the voice-acting is excellent. (The animators don't seem to have gotten the girls right at first, but it definitely improves from episode 10 on, just in time as that's when Kaya becomes an important character.)Really hope they manage to fix their issues and get season 2 done!

Enjoyed the first & second season! My favourite character is Hiramaru Kun...LOL! Without him, the anime would have been bored to death!

Okay readers beware the reviews about this dvd set, make it easier to believe the subtitles are worse than they actually are. There are a few flaws, like they have there pronouns are mixed up etc. There's this part in the first epsiode there it says, usally I go to the movies or hangout online on my computer. Quite a few people can see whats wrong with this sentance but most won't care and just carry on watching, the subtitles are still lets say use correct english 75% of the time. Of corse I am dispointed that they couldn't be brothered to subtitle the opening or ending songs except when the artists sings in english. This is actually a great series and it doesn't fall into the overuse fanservice jokes which meny anime use in order to attact male viewers. Instead we are teated to an almost reallife account of what it takes to be in the mangaka these days. Although there are flaws with the soundtrack/subtitles and the fact that in Mashiro uncle's studio there are loads of copyies of the same books. It's still a great anime although I nearly did lose intrest around epsiode 8 only for it to be regrained in epsiode 19 when the story gets really intresting with the summer cup and yes the anime does diff from the manga story in some parts but the anime should always be watched before you make up your opinion. So if I were you just sit back and enjoy an a great anime like I did.

Slice of life Animé but with seriously flawed subtitles
Let's talk about the Anime first. It's a comedy/slice of life take on the trials and difficulties it is for two young students, Mashiro and Takagi who want to become Manga artists. Mashiro does the art and Takagi does the writing. It's almost like an insiders look into how Mangaka (Manga artists) in real life become who they are and what they deal with. Bakuman also has a side love story plot to help keep momentum and drive things along. Visually it's a real pleasure with special attention to keeping characters looking individual. It's also full of references to other current popular Manga series such as Bleach, Shonen Jump (known as Shonen Jack in this) and Dragon Ball get's special mentions. It certainly has it's moments to make you want to watch the next episode, but at the same time, it's a very slow starter. You will find characters repeating themselves more often than wanted and it takes time to wind into gear. I have not read the Manga so I cannot compare to how faithful this adaptation is.Now onto the MAJOR flaw. This version is subtitled only and they are a big mess. Straight away there is constant spelling and grammar errors. Some you can let slide because your brain automatically corrects the fault if the overall sentence makes sense. However, more often than not, some of the grammar errors actually screw up some of the plot details leading you in the wrong direction before it corrects itself. For example, during Mashiro and Takagi's first Manga they both agree NOT to comment on each others work. However, the subtitles keep insisting that they agreed they WILL talk about it. Then at the end of the plot point, they both stated they should of said something to each other instead of agreeing to silence. This confused me the first time but it was because the subtitles kept getting it wrong.Overall, worth looking at or learning more about but just be aware that the subtitles basically suck. If you're not a fast reader or need time to digest the information, this is hard to recommend. If you do want to see the series, try finding the American version of the series as that one has an English dub attached (and probably better subtitles.)

Loved the manga but cancelled my order when I saw the subs !!!
Way to go Kaze, how to ruin a series a lot of us have been waiting a long time for.I loved the manga, have seen the series the 'disapproved way' and have been waiting patiently for the series to be released over here so I could buy it. Except I've been shown a couple of episodes and the subtitling is really bad. I want to support the UK anime industry, but will only do so if they produce something I can watch. This is not it.Apparently the US release is fine so perhaps I'll get that instead.

Bad Subtitles....
The subtitles were terrible, in the first 5 or so minutes there was around 6 errors...(here are some screenshots, scroll down to post 7) http://www.uk-anime.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38771Its a real shame since this is such a great anime. Madman Entertainment will be releasing the complete season 1 later this year, so it might be worth waiting to see if theirs is any better.

Great surprise!
I was so looking forward to seeing Bakuman on my TV screen!! I'm a bit disappointed that it's a subtitle only release, dubbing would have been great, but I'm happy with it :)
