Excellent value for money
Do not be put off by the cost as this series of books are excellent value for money in both the printed content and instructional CD,s supplied (6 in total per supplied per book). These books are not tutorials from novice upwards - they are not intended to be, they are written for someone whom has learnt the basics and wants to expand their musical range. The full series of 4 books provide 80 songs in total (20 per book) and all are written with a beginning version then onto intermediate and then finally advanced.Steve writes excellent arrangements of tunes and is an excellent tutor (He is also presently the only 3 time US national flat picking champion) I cannot praise these books enough and fully recommend them to anyone serious about bluegrass guitar.

Brilliant book
This was a present for my dad and he absolutely loved it. It arrived on time and was in an excellent condition and so are the CDs. It is value for money as there is so much music and the CDs are very useful. Great present for any bluegrass or fingerpicking guitar fan.

The Best Flatpicking Material You Can Buy (IMHO)
I'm surprised that nobody else has written a review on this book and CDs as it represents the first volume of what is currently 4 in a series looking at Bluegrass 'standards' - how to play the basic melody and some examples of soloing over them. Here's what it says on Steve Kuafman's own site. "A champion flatpicker takes some favorite bluegrass solos and breaks them down so you can really hold your own in a hot jam session. This unique six cassette course has been produced for all levels of players: Steve Kaufman teaches the melody to familiarize the beginning guitarist with the tune in it's most basic form; then he gets the intermediate guitarist started on a series of licks and runs with the intermediate version of the same tune. The advanced version will spice up the tune and make it a real show piece"I've actually stood beside Steve and asked what any flatpicker should be working on once they kn0w the basics and can play a bit. This is the book and CDs he recommends - not because it's expensive - but because the 6 CDs and book cover so much that you need to know to jam with other players and do solo gigs in the Bluegrass style. 20 songs give you about an hour (maybe less) of good solid playing at a gig and knowing there are three other versions of this series means that's four hours sorted and 80 tunes nailed. These are all songs you need to know - the best known, the standards of Bluegrass flatpicking. You'll also want to look at the other three books and CDs, but parallel to that take a look at Ragtime and Polkas Flatpicking the Rags and Polkas [With 2 CDs ], Waltzes, Steve Kaufman - Learn To Play Waltzes [DVD ] and Crowd Pleasers Steve Kaufman Teachers Crowd Pleasers And Showstoppers [DVD] [2009 ]. All good giggable material.Although this might seem expensive, it is 6 CDs and a nicely produced book of everything you need to knock out these songs at performance level. Steve is a very good teacher in this medium. So, if you can play a bit and have got the basics down - alternate picking, know your basic chords and barres, scales, and can play up the neck a bit, then these books and CDs are aimed at you. Steve feels this is some of his best work. He's very enthusiastic about them.
