Tries way too hard
Hassle free transactionSome spoilersthe fact that I didn't like it doesn't mean its not a good film. I just didn't like it. To be fair it was well done.It tells the story of a typical modern day family. divorced mother and father and one lovely child. father goes off to callously live with new partner and mum is left to house herself and daughter in a crummy flat.... sorry, we have to say apartment these days. Why here - it's all mum can afford. Why crummy -it's dirty dilapidated and the whole atmosphere (evidence of the well made film) is oppressive and creepy.Hands up how many people would have stayed there? no go on put your hands up? no -one? odd then that these days when everyone has seen a film a bit like this that someone would dare to stay there in the first place - I'd live further away in a smaller dirtier place that reek of death and the super natural. ON TOP OF ALL THIS Mum Is suffering from some sort of post traumatic stress disorder brought about by a plotline. This plot line involves water. So when the flat... apartment upstairs is visited and is flooded to shin height you'd have thought you know what? that kennel up state - is looking good about now. When weird things start happening and her daughter give cause for mummy to be summoned from work the kennel upstate with a savage dog is looking really good. When mummy goes upstairs - she's there almost as much as she is in her own flat....apartment - and the walls stream with water - or is it blood it was so 'dark and brooding with menace' it was hard to tell - The kennel upstate with savage dog with rabies and puppies is seems positively idyllic.so it's building to a climax. Really? I had no idea. Honestly I said out lout 'just get on with it!'. In the last 15 mins mins the back story to explain all the weirdness unfolds leading to a moment of ahhhh time. Which you know is the precursor to the really big bad bit.To be fair the big bad bit is creepy and done wellish. what I didn't see coming was the last bit. so I wont spoil it for anyone.one thing I wish I hadn't done was watch some of the alternative scenes in the extras because they had an alternative ending and I cant remember exactly which one was in the film. The trust of the ending was the same it was just how there was an added bit of Ahhhness. All in all it was ott for the atmosphere and tried way too hard to be creepy and mysterious and suspenseful. Sometimes those are things you can manufacture but the best examples are just unfolded as natural effects of the story.ACID TEST: would I buy again/recommend - NO

Almost four stars
It takes courage to make a thriller with no particular peak or high anxiety. This one is more focus on a drama that slowly unfolds through the movie, a story where all the "thrilling" moments are meant to add a puzzle that reveal not just a mystery to solve in the plot, but a drama to elaborate from within the main character of the movie (an always enchantable Jennyfer Connely)

Subtle
I thought this was actually pretty good,no I haven't seen the Japanese original,I have seen both versions of The Grudge though and I was pleasantly surprised by that(the American one),It's a rare thing,a 'horror' film with no gore,no gratuitous violence and thankfully no potty mouths, there is honestly more bad language in five minutes of an Eli Roth film than in my entire DVD collection, possibly even my CDs as well!

Scary psychological thriller
Very well acted. Never quite sure because of the mother's terrible childhood whether she is really seeing supernatural manifestations or just imagining it. Also we don't know what her pills are for.I thoroughly recommend this.

Solid Suspense Film
I'll admit that I bought this film for Jennifer Connelly, and I was pleasantly surprised to watch a dark and tense horror film, that was well acted. The ending wasn't quite to my taste, but don't let that detract from watching the film and drawing your own opinion.

Dark water, dark story...
Ok, it's a modern ghost story about a little girl who was abandoned, drowned, in a New York apartment block, and returns to haunt the new tenants. But it's Jennifer Connolly at her best; and it's entirely set on Roosevelt Island, which sits in the East River facing Manhattan, but is shunned by New Yorkers because it has nothing but project housing (council blocks) and once had an asylum or leper colony on it; and you get to it by the funicular from Manhattan, which is the opening shot. Beautiful, sad film; and a little-known account of New York.

Dark Water
