First, despite our Tefal steam iron station claim to be self cleaning (but was 3/4 blocked) I put a dose into the tank and then rested the actual steam iron in the diluted solution so that the sole plate was just covered. After several minutes of fizzing the solution had gone very milky. I changed it several times and after about 30 minutes of different soaks the steam sole plate holes were clear. The only way to get the solution through was to turn the iron on and then a whole lot more milky solution came out and immediately hardened on the hot sole plate. More soaking was needed. This went on for about a further 30 minutes. Eventually the iron was performing as it did when it was bought two years ago. Brilliant. Now I was into descaling mode and our Bosch kettle got a dose. After the fizzing had stopped (just 3 or 4 minutes) I emptied the milky water away and found the kettle still had a thick crust on the kettle bottom so put a second treatment in. Five minutes late the kettle was sparkling clean and the water level window was was also clear. By this stage I had used close on half a bottle of the descaler but the iron was working like new and the kettle is as well. Neither had been descaled for two years and we live in a hard water area (the iron instructions says not to use descaler!). Conclusion: This descaler works very quickly and is very, very effective. Just beware that there are some fumes that can irritate your nose/throat if breathed in - especially after placing the solution into the freshly boiled water of the kettle - be careful taking the lid of and inhaling the escaping fumes. Review: The effect is amazing. Much simpller than removing the u-bend by disconnecting ... - A bidet u-bend after 25 years was clogged with limescale. NOTE: a u-bend's worth of descaler will only dissolve so much limescale. Hence I found it took six goes of 150ml per night for six nights before no more fizzing and totally clear. The effect is amazing. Much simpler than removing the u-bend by disconnecting the hot and cold and waste pipe cemented through the wall! I also used it to descale an electric iron that no longer would spray water. Even diluted, the effect was explosive; it was cleared straight away. The iron being hot meant the chemical reaction was speeded up. The iron now works like new. We live in a very hard water area. I also used it in a bedroom wash basin. I didn't expect it to clear this as I suspected hair and slime blocking the u-bend. They're full of limescale...** A: Possibly because this descaler WILL remove ALL limescale. I had the same problem 1 year ago and this is what I did. First purchase some Mr Muscle drain unblocker. You need this to cut through the grease and muck which has built up over the years. Pour equal amounts of unblocker and descaler 50/50 in a 1 pint glass jug making sure not to breath in the fumes as it is then somewhat toxic. Gently pour down the sink. Leave for about 1 hour or over night if blocked badly and repeat if necessary. Good luck. Let me know how you got on. David **Q: Is this safe on plastic fittings? I want to descale my toilet cistern but I'm worried it might damage the plastic/rubber fittings?** A: I use this product to clean and descale my espresso machine. The water tank is made of rigid plastic and the water inlet is a soft rubber/silicon material. I have been using this product fairly regularly and for some time now with no issues. Follow the manufactures safety instructions as this is not your average descalant. **Q: Can this be used in a steam generator iron ?** A: I used in my wifes steam generator. I placed some in the water tank in dilution and let it stand for around 15 minutes and also placed some in a shallow tray and placed the sole plate of the actual iron in it. I had to do this several times with the actual iron as so much scale came out. I then turned the iron on, to its coolest setting that steam could be generated at and kept using the steam blast until no more white water (disolved scale) came out and then repeated with clean water to flush/rinse. It took over an hour but the results were well worth it as the steam generator / iron seems to be back to the original performance. Ours is a Tefal steam generator iron. Use plenty of ventilation when you're using it and be sure to wear gloves as it is very powerful.
