This allows for fruit flies to get into the compost material generating, you guessed it, more fruit flies. I fought with them for about three weeks trying to get their numbers under control before I realized where they were coming from. These filters seem to fit better than the ones I originally bought, so I don't have concerns that fruit flies will be an issue with these. Even if I replace the disk every two or three weeks, this pack will last me for several months, so it's a great bargain.
