    Difficult second album syndrome

*by F***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 6 July 2012*

It's interesting to see that the fabled "Difficult Second Album Syndrome" doesn't only exist in the pop and rock world. As with another person reviewing this album, I also bought the first CD and went to see him live and so I was really looking forward to the release of Latino. I can only say that it is indeed very disappointing. When you consider the range of music available to choose from where Latin American guitar is concerned, the selection on offer here is a bit of a let down. With all the compositions written by Barrios, did we really need two very similar sounding tremolo pieces? Too many Tangos, I know they are quintessentially South American but even so...and the arrangement of La Cumparsita is so tuneless, it almost makes for painful listening. At best most of the album is pedestrian and, when the guitar is smothered by completely unnecessary strings, at worst it becomes dull, Easy Listening elevator music (Piazzolla's Libertango can sound stunning when played by solo guitar but here it is washed away by a sea of strings). So much for all the guff about Passion, emotion and intensity. The real shame is that I like Milos, I liked his first album, in concert he has a great personality that comes across in his playing and he undoubtedly has talent...but none of those things are on show here. I only hope that for his next album he ditches the awful strings and gets some fire in his soul about the pieces he is performing.
