Welcome to the late 60’s
Unlike Wayne Shorter's albums from the early 60's this albums Super Nova is very much "of it's time", it reflects the freedom and spiritual awakening that was popular in the art of the late 60's. Shorter's playing is wild at points though always engaging but the album as a whole lacks cohesion, when compared to the quality of his earlier work. The recording quality is also not as high as some of his other studio work, Shorter himself is always foreground but some of the other instruments lack definition, sadly this includes Tony Williams drums. You may like this album if you are a fan of Bitches Brew by Miles, or Infinite Search by Miroslav Vitous.

Just buy it, ferchrissakes, it's beautiful
Absolutely intoxicating album of power and grace, featuring 2 of the scariest guitarists in music history: John McLaughlin and Sonny Sharrock. Still, it isn't fair of me to focus on the axemen when everybody here put in such transcendent performances. Both earthy and spiritual, this album is worth a lifetime of listens.

Essential Shorter
Mostly I agree with what other reviewers have said, with a couple of differences. First of all, this is not purely a free jazz date, but the harmonic and rhythmic structures are BARELY there. Mostly it's a lot of rubato, instrumental colors and Shorter's ferocious blowing. Secondly, Shorter wasn't strictly easy listening in the Weather Report era. For examples, check out Waltz in Db on the Domino Theory album or Fast City on the Night Passage album or Manolete on the Sweetnighter album or the live side of the I Dream the Body Electric album. But in general, I agree--this is most consistently passionate playing of Shorter's career. Thirdly, I wouldn't recommend this as a bridge from rock to jazz. It's altogether too uncompromising. More like a bridge from fossilized, imprisoned-in-a-museum-behind-glass Wynton Marsalis [junk] to free jazz. If you would like to read more reviews like this, check out JazzboNotes.com.
