Dynamic Duo Vitamin D3’s natural partner is Vit K2. One of Vit D3’s functions is its ability to powerfully enhance calcium absorption. Vitamin K2, through a chemical step called carboxylation, regulates and balances the coagulation system as a whole. The coagulation system is ready to clot if you are hemorrhaging, but it must also prevent the clot if there are not lacerations or bleeding points. There are eight proteins that counter-regulate one another in this intricate balancing act. Vit K is required for this amazing feat. Carboxylation of osteocalcin is another regulatory job of Vit K. This process works to maintain the proper mineralization of bones – giving bones their strong protein matrix. Activated osteocalcin also stimulates adiponectin, a potent fat metabolism stimulator that assists people in controlling healthy weight. MK-4 Versus MK-7 There are two forms of Vitamin K used in supplements – MK-4 and MK-7. The MK-7 form has been shown to have 6 times the activity of MK-4 in the blood. In addition, MK-7 has been found to remain in the blood approximately 9 times longer than MK-4. These important considerations make MK-7 the optimal form of Vitamin K2 for health. Dense Bones Are Not Always Stronger Bones Bone strength is more than bone density. Your bones are composed of minerals in a collagen matrix. This mineral composition gives your bones their rigidity and density but your collagen gives the bones flexibility. This flexibility prevents them from becoming brittle and weak. Many conventional drug therapies used to prevent osteoporosis interfere with your normal bone-remodeling process because they destroy your osteoclastic activity. Research suggests that you are much better off building bones utilizing exercise and nutritional therapies, including the use of Vit D and Vit K supplementation.
