Nice collection of regional information
- As a graduate student I read many books focused on mosses and lichens. This guide is quite a refreshing addition to my library. It is easy to read and in English - not scientific jargon! I find it to be a good collection of information about the 'Mosses, Lichens & Ferns in NW North America'. I purchased it as a regional reference of moss and lichen data. I was not disappointed. The inclusion of ferns and liverworts is very appropriate for this region of the continent! (Some of the pictures aren't as great as those in Lichens of North America - but still good.) It is just the right size for a day pack complete with good quality paper. Another quality Lone Pine Product.

Great for PNW mosses
There are no truly comprehensive field guides for Pacific Northwestern mosses, but this little book covers many more species than most. It will be a great addition to my proverbial "five-foot bookshelf" (more like fifteen feet) of field guides.

I'm a bit dissatisfied
I've purchased this book in addition to "Plants of the Pacific Northwest coast" from the same Lone Pine series, therefore I had an idea, it would be, at least, the same quality.Actually, illustrations look "washed out" and blurred, comparing to my previous book. Several species have non-representative photos, displaying sporophytes only and giving no idea of leaves appearance. Several photos are just "mess of something green and white specular highlights".And, comparing with other Bryophyte biology books I have (by British authors) and with "Plants ..." book that does have the mosses chapter, this book lacks botanical drawing of leaves, shoots and other parts. Indeed, text descriptions could be enough if you trying to narrow the ID, but inability to make simple visual comparison, based on detailed drawings, makes recognition of unfamiliar species quite problematic, especially keeping in mind quality of photos.Anyway, I don't know the alternative, so I have to keep it, but in other case I'd send it back.

Four Stars
Beautiful photographs. It is organized better than some for beginners to identify plants.

Mosses lichens and ferns of NW North America
I meant to get a book on the Northeast North America. However this proved to be general enough so that it was useful for me to use in the field.

Green world
It is good to see a handbook of these items. Some exist for ferns, but mosses and lichens have been ignored. Got out the magnifying glass and started looking hard.
