There is a real brutality in battle.
The metaphor of the thistle at the beginning is telling. Tolstoy portrayed loyalty in battle as well as acceptance of the inevitability of death. There is usually a shadow hovering over his characters and this book (his last) is no exception.

Horrible
Typos on every page. Barely annotated. Don't waste your dollar. Remember there is a Peaver and Volokhonsky version of this in paperback for like 8 bucks.

Today's war explained a century ago
Learn more about the war in Afghanistan than you could from a month of CNN or YouTube videos. Tolstoy captured it over 100 years ago writing about Chechnya.

Interesting take on Russian aggression.
Tolstoy's look at aggression into other lands. He attempts to understand Islam and offer respect. Worth reading. It is another glimpse into mankind.

The worst of Tolstoy's novels.

A good Tolstoy read.
The book gives insight into Caucasian politics in Russia and sketches a beautiful main character. The background is the author at his usual descriptive flair. A book to recommend for Tolstoy readers.

Really rubbish edition. Uses ridiculous language; careless use of punctuation and there are grammatical and spelling errors everywhere. Chapter 1 alone is insufferable for any reader. Don't buy this edition!
