Excellent but where is the companion CD I also paid for?
Excellent book. Would be even better if the companion CD was delivered with the book, but the Seller (Amazon) did not include it in my package. So beware

Five Stars
Best VB6 book you will ever read; and you MUST read!

Quality content, but only for the real hardcore programmers.
I have heard that over 2 million people own a copy of Steven Hawkings "A Brief History of Time" but most of them don't get past page 50 or so because the subject matter is just too hard. This book is A Brief History of Time for VB developers.Matt Curland was originally part of the MS team that developed VB, and was (in part?) responsible for Intellisense, so he's well qualified to talk at any level about VB6. His writing style is clear and concise, but to have any chance with this book, you will need to read it carefully from start to finish in order. The book is particularly concerned with performance code.String manipulation in VB6 is notoriously slow and Matt has some neat ways for speeding things up dramatically. There is quite detailed coverage of lightweight COM objects, and he has a very neat section which culminates in the code for a generalised quicksort algorithm that can work with any data type.VB6 is pretty long in the tooth of course now, and very few of the things you learn here will be transferable to VB.NET, however if you are a VB6 hardcore programmer. If you bought and appreciated Bruce McKinney's and Dan Appleman's VB6 books, then this should also be on your shelf somewhere.

Often an inspiration
This book really is hard-core. If you have some C/C++ knowledge then this will be more useful to you as it goes into the low levels of memory. Pointers and how bytes are arranged, Safearrays, etc. The chapter on String manipulation is worthy of the cover price as we all know that VB6 is a dog in this area. Beware though, this is not for novice developers. It's probably worth getting one for the whole department as it's not a book you or your colleagues will be reading everyday.

Great
It was what I expected. I needed a book on basic programing and it is one. It came fast and in good condition.

Looks good. Haven't referred to it

Disappointed
The book came without the CD; I wish I had read the reviews before buying this book. While it has useful info in it, a lot of what I read so far is based on functions contained on the CD. They were available online apparently but I cannot locate them now.

Useless esoteric information
Didn't teach me much useful information. The author gets caught up in describing very complex esoteric methods that were totally useless and not practical to me. I've been professionally programming in VB for over 20 years and have written several very successful commercial applications, so I'm no novice either.
