Nice idea and form factor....but it dosent work
Nope. Sorry folks. There is one major flaw that makes this product useless.First of all, this is a great idea, great construction and great form factor. Having been bombarded by fruit flies after trips to the farmers market, I grow tired of constructing my own traps, finding the right jar and getting the paper just the right size to fit.At first, this item looked very promising. Within a half-hour, the inside of the trap was crawling with flies. Great. Ecstatic. It works!Nope. After careful observation, I noted that flies were exiting the “Trap” as easily as they entered. It’s not the size or placement of the hole or type of lure. It’s the thickness of the plastic in the vertical around the hole; it’s too thick. It’s not thin enough to confuse the spatial reasoning of the common fruit fly. They just crawl right out.I have to reason, given all the great reviews, is that folks just see the “trap” with many flies inside and just think they are confined. If you sit around and release the flies’ outside every few hours, I guess this would work. If you want them to be trapped and go about your daily routine, this aint it.I plan on keeping the device. I plan on finagling the thickness around the hole with a jewelers file and see if I can get this to work….it has potential..

Not bad
When I first tried this trap, the results were mostly disappointing. I put various bait inside of it (fruit, apple cider vinegar, sugar water) & placed it near places where fruit flies were hanging out in my kitchen. Out of about 30 fruit flies, only 3 went inside of it. I actually had better luck when I unscrewed the cap, turned it upside down & then placed fruit inside of it mixed with water. But if you're gonna do that, there's really no point in buying this thing. You'd be just as well off using a generic plastic bowl or cup. I'll update my review if some other bait works better but, for now, this trap is not much more than a cute little ornament hanging out on my kitchen countertop.[Update]: Ok, at the suggestion of a couple ppl (including a spokesperson for the company who makes this trap), I tried some different bait & the trap seems to be working much better now. The bait i'm currently using is strawberry jam mixed with a little water. The only problem is that it took several days for the jelly to decay enuff to really attract the fruit flies. But it does indeed work & so far, it's caught about a dozen of the little suckers. I'm gonna try some of the other suggestions as well to see if I can get quicker results. But I am now a happy camper & have also bumped my rating up a couple stars.

I tried several different baits in each to see which worked best (banana, citrus
Bought these to help with a fruit fly swarm in my kitchen. I tried several different baits in each to see which worked best (banana, citrus, etc.) and they worked okay, catching several flies in the first few hours. I then noticed the flies were attracted to an empty glass that had recently held my constitutional shot of bourbon (medicinal only, I swear!) so I put a splash of Elijah Craig in one and a banana peel in the other and the little buggers piled into the bourbon filled trap like college kids to a frat party. Overnight the entire swarm had ended their party and lay in a drunken stupor at the bottom of the trap and were easily disposed of. No more fruit flies! I highly recommend these traps and the constitutional bourbon.

Some are too smart to get trapped
Very pleased with this product.Much better than any homemade or store bought trap.Less critters, but some are too smart (1 out of 50 escape). I think they might have smartphones texting others to fly away, lol.I am very pleased, just wish it would get rid of them in one day.It took weeks/months to get this problem.Only a few days with red wine and a slice of banana has reduced critters tremendously.Love this product. Would recommend.UPDATE: no more fruit flies!!! It works.Cheap merlot and a slice of banana with skin.Very happy!!!

It works!!
I originally left negative feedback for this product/company by mistake (the review was meant for a prior company; I do apologize!).I ordered this particular fruit fly trap because the particular product I wanted was now being sold as a new model that I did not find success with. So I ordered this fruit fly trap out of pure desperation. When it arrived, I read the insert and placed it in my kitchen. At first, I was convinced it was not working since I did not see any fruit flies in the trap but I did see them flying around. A week or so later, I decided to toss the product but to my surprise I noticed a number of fruit flies in the trap and that I had not seen any flying around. So I was truly a happy camper!!

Works exactly as expected, cleared out flies in under a week.
I was out of the house for about a week on a self-supported bike tour. While I was gone, housemates filled every sink with dishes, and failed to take out the trash after they filled the can. The WHOLE HOUSE was awash with fruit flies! I placed one of these in the kitchen, one in the upstairs bathroom, and one in my room, and within a week the house was free of flies. For bait, I simply used an ounce or so of cheap beer (Rolling Rock, to be precise). There was no odor emitted from the devices until I opened them for cleaning. The combined remains of hundreds of flies and bad beer was pretty pungent! I washed everything out with dish soap, dried the devices, and put them away.My only gripe, and one i've got to remove a star for, after using the devices and cleaning them with regular Dawn and hot water, I found the two halves to slide against each other very poorly. They'd stick and hitch every bit of the way. This would cause a bit of an issue if you were refilling them again with a liquid lure. They still *worked*, it was just titchy.

Didn't work for me
It was very easy to set up. However, I used all three bait recommendations (ripe banana, yeast mix, vinegar) and no flies went into the trap. I don't know if this would work for anyone else as I've also tried the saran wrap trap and no flies went into that trap either. Maybe my fruit flies are smarter than the average bear...
