The Trickster

Genuinely unputdownable
A series of gruesome deaths take place in an isolated ski resort in the Canadian Rockies. The local native Indian population comes under much suspicion, and these people, their history, culture and other people’s attitude to them is a large part of what makes the book so fascinating. Sam Hunt was brought up on the reserve, but has spent his adult life trying to distance himself from his background. We learn, alongside Sam himself, why he can’t afford to do that. The book takes us on a wonderful ride, which switches back and forth between the present day and events surrounding the coming of the railroad, when the same ancient evil was unleashed.

You’ll never look at the family dog the same way again..!
Starts really well, rolls along at a fair pace with a lot of tension (and a fair bit of blood!), builds to a suitable, chilling climax - then sort of fizzles out with issues/questions left unresolved. Still liked it though.

Best read ever.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good read. The Trickster is definitely the best horror/suspense book I have ever read. I'm a huge fan of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, James Herbert, Clive Barker but, my apologies to these authors, this particular book beats any of theirs. The story starts and continues to hold the readers attention to the very end, there are no slow parts at all just pure undiluted suspense throughout the book.

Simply the Best!
I'd previously read 'The Ancient' and 'Furnace', so I had some idea of Muriel Gray's style. I wasn't disappointed with 'The Trickster' in fact I think it's her best book. I couldn't put it down and the story stayed with me, so much so - that although I had borrowed it from the local library, I decided to buy it and read it again!

Finally replaced.
I got this book when it was first published. I have enjoyed reading it many times over the years and was devastated one morning to find it chewed up by my lovely 6 month old puppy who had discovered he could jump up and reach the book shelves! Thoroughly enjoyed reading it again!

Horror with an interesting pespective.
This is good horror fiction, with an interesting perspective on native americans and a personal struggle to retain your former dignity.

Good read .
Fast paced and entertaining . We tend to forget about all the Canadian Indians. A little hard to follow at the end, but all and all a good read.

A huge build-up.....
A terrific novel with a disappointing ending. 420 pages to lay the groundwork to an anti-climatic ending. There is so much redeeming writing here, that I hate to dissuade anyone from reading this tale. This is my first read of work by Muriel Gray. I paln on reading more of Ms. Gray's work, but am not 100% sold yet!
