The body does not make iodine, so it is an essential part of your diet. Iodine is found in various foods. If you do not have enough iodine in your body, you cannot make enough thyroid hormone. Lugol's iodine, also known as aqueous iodine and strong iodine solution, is a disinfectant used for a number of purposes. Taken by mouth it is used to treat iodine deficiency. As a disinfectant it may be applied to small wounds such as a needle stick injury. A small amount may also be used for emergency disinfection of drinking water. Do not use Lugol solution if you are allergic to iodine.
